I have Webers on a '71 with modified heads and hotter cam (but I did it so long ago I can't remember what cam I have! I've had the car since new...)and now I'm restoring a '73 2.0 and am having a real time with the FI and am thinking of switching to carbs (at least to get it to start!). Eventually I'll put a different cam in it, but will it run reasonably ok with Webers till I have time to pull the engine and put in a new cam? And I assume the smaller Webers- or what about Dellorto (Sp?) I've heard some good things about them. Any ideas would be appreciated- preferrably from people who have done it, not those trying to sell them...

I have run 40 webers and 40 dells. I am currently running 45 dells. Dells has a different design that moves off idle much better than a Weber. Dells are much easier to tune. You don't have to disassemble the carb to change jets. They are made right and left handed, have vacuum ports, and parts are cheaper (Weber venturi $21, Dell $11). Still are readily available.
Biggest drawback, they are NLA. You can still find them on the web, sometimes on ebay. (two sets of 45s in the last 3 weeks) CGNJ |

Dells are still available, in fact I'm a distributor for brand new ones!!! I normally only sell them as an option on my new engines.
DELLS are absolutely great, they flow about 45 CFM more across the board, than a comparable weber. They also have nicer idle and progression circuits, and dial in like none other.. Every car I own has Dells, I tossed my last pair of webers last weekend.. As for a cam, go with WEB for any cam and lifter sets, all the other cams have caused me heartaches.. I like an 86 grind for more power with stock heads, and compression. The 86A is good ffor ported headss, and 8.5:1 CR.... |

What is involved in changing the CAM? Does it require a complete tear down?

Before you give up on the FI, tell us what your symptoms and problems are, maybe it's something simple.

Jake Raby,
Concerning the dell's. which size are the ones that you use for the 914 I understand thy come from sizes 40-48 IDA or IDF(I dont know which). What are the prices for a pair of dells plus the linkage setup. I currently use webers and I agree that they are very prone to continuous maintenence and I may be interested in a pair of dell's. thanks, Kelly |

Jake Raby:
I have a set of 36mm dells. One of them seems to have a leak in the progression ports. Any idea who could fix this ? There is backfire through the exhaust when up to temperature. thanks in advance Cliff |

The car will indeed run with carbs and a stock cam. You're leaving a whole lot of performance "on the table" if you go that way, which is why most people seem to recommend switching the cam when you go to carbs.
I still think that the stock FI is the best bet for a stock (or very slightly modified) motor. Don't be surprised if you can buy a lot of FI parts for the amount of money it takes to buy and tune a set of carbs properly. --DD |

The "GUY" for Dellorto serious repairs is ART THRAEN @ aircooled engineering in Salt Lake City...He does my serious repairs and progression port leakage fixes..
The new Dells are 1K/set, in all sizes, from 36-48, 45's are the hardest for us to get. These are brand new, super sweet carbs. I also have several sets of used DELLS in stock. The stock 914 engine likes 40's best, and bigger engines size is according to the engine combo. |
