Post oil temp guage sending unit

Hi, I am new to 914s, bought a 72 1.7 in really good shape. It has a center console with all working guages except oil temp. The guage is ok as I have checked it out but cannot find location of the sending unit.My haynes manual does not list this in the wiring diagrams, just 73 and up models. Is this console and guages an add on from a later car, not abvailable in 72? This would explain why I can't find the sending unit. Also will replacing the gear shift linkage bushings improve the slop in the shifting or is this something I have to live with, mine has the tail shifter? Thanks guys for any info-----willy

The temp sender is on the round plate(about 4 in Dia.) near the Alt looking from under the car.The bushing's being replaced will make shifting much better less mis-shifts.Steve

Thanks Steve, I looked every where for this but could have missed it. I suspect my car doesn't have it but I sure will look. Do you know if my 72 was supposed to have a temp sender unit? Also I was going to e-mail you on your fs add, do you have a rear reflector you would want to sell?

Hello

The sending unit sits in the forward left steelcover from the enginecase close to the engine carrier bar. Visible from underside ther is a bubbled cover over it. Wire runs out ther along the fanshroud and comes out on the passenger side is the connectet at the forward battey post area. Color of the wire is green/black.

All 914/2,0 had the oiltempsender and a instrument.

As far as I know, the 72s did not have the center console with the three gauges. Some of them had a different version without gauges, similar to those used in the 914-6.

All of the cars which had the later-style center consoles, and all 2.0 cars, had an oil temp gauge and therefore an oil temp sender. It isn't that likely that a 72 would have the sender, since it wouldn't have come with the gauge.

You might have a center console that did not come with the car.....

If there is no sender under the engine....it's pretty obvious. You can probably get a "Bug Pack" one with matching gage that uses a dip stick sender. Available at most VW hot rod shops....

Otherwise, you need to do some mods on the engine to put it in the stock location.

Hey...good excuse to put a 2.0 in that puppy.
