I hope this is simple for someone out there to answer! What is the easiest way to tell the difference between the 1.7 , 1.8, and 2.0 engines? I have found another 914 sitting in a field that is in really good shape, considering it has been sitting there a few years. The guy that owns it said the engine needs rebuilt, but he couldn't remember what size it was, and the car has no emblems on it.I know it has the newer 914 bumpers on it, but don't know what year it is yet. Hopefully I will own it this weekend!!! TIA for any information !!

If it's got the Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers, it was originally a 1.8 or 2.0. The 2.0 FI system has a throttle body that goes straight up and down, while the 1.8 system's throttle body lays over on its side.
The 2.0 has three studs holding the intake runners onto the heads--two up on the sides, and one down in between. The 1.8 (and, for that matter, all the other Type IV motors) have four studs--two on the sides, and two down in the middle. GA, GB, and GC are what 2.0 engine serial numbers start with. Their serial number would be up in front of the oil filler on the case. EC would be a 1.8 serial number. It would be up on the left-rear part of the top of the engine case. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

Another thing to look for is the shape of the air cleaner assembly. 2.0's have a square-shaped one and 1.7's have a round one. DD has already pointed out the easily identifiable three-stud configuration that attaches the two intake tubes on each side of the 2.0 motor.

The third number of the VIN #...tells the year. 476 will be a 76, 475 a 75...
The VINs are under the front windshield driver side on a stamped plate, another plate in the front trunk passenger side above the spare tire well, and another one that is engraved and may be painted over on the top of passenger side front wheel well. |

Thanks for the help!! I knew about finding the serial # but didn't know how to tell what year. I couldn't look at the sticker in the door jamb, because the guy couldn't find the keys right off and I was in a hurry. I am planning on going back this weekend and will find out more. Hopefully I will have pics of it, hopefully it will be mine!!!
