paint code

Is the paint code on the tag in the front trunk on the passenger side of the head light side area? It's some type of yellow for 1974.

I don't think there is any paint code on the front trunk tag. There is on the "Karmann Tag", which is located on the front part of the driver's door jamb. There may also be a tag higher up with the color name.

Check this website for samples:

Particularly note B2 (the "Karmann Tag") and B1A through B1D.

You can see many of the color "chips" here:

You can decode the color codes in at least a couple of places:

Thanks that will really help. I also have a question. In the rear trunk below the passenger rear tail light there is a number stamped in the trunk floor. What is it for? It's not part of the VIN.

It's the chassis number. That was a number for just the unfinished body as it rolled down the line. Sometimes you can see a hand-written number that matches that one somewhere up under the dash.

BTW, Dave Pateman would love to know your VIN, chassis number, and paint code...
