Trouble Installing Transmission in '74 2.0

Well, after sitting for 10 years, I finally got around to removing the old transmission on my '74 2.0 and am in the process of installing a rebuilt one. Problem is I can't seem to get the input shaft lined up to properly mate the transmission case to the engine case. All four bolt holes are lined up and I'm turning the CV shafts to try and get the splines on the input shaft lined up. But no go. I can't fully press the rear of the transmission case against the engine. It's about a half inch out. What should I be looking for? Do I need one of those clutch alignment tools? I thought those were only needed, when replacing the clutch?

Anyone in the San Francisco area available this coming week to help me out? I'd be more than willing to pay you for your time, buy beer, lunch, etc...

Thanks,
Steve

Remember that you have to turn both output flanges the same direction, and the transmisison has to be in gear, if you want the input shaft to turn.

I remember having trouble like this on my last clutch job, and I think it was just a question of getting the transmission input shaft splines lined up correctly, and wiggling the trans to make sure everything lined up.

Aha! Forgot about the turning both in the same direction and transmission must be in gear part. Thanks Dave!
