I have a 1.7 liter that is shot. I plan to rebuild it with the following: I have 1.7L block, NEW 2.0L 94MM COFAP pistons & cylinders, 2.0L rods, Rebuilt 1.8L Fuel Injected Heads, New dual 44 idf webbers, I plan to buy 2.0L Crank and a new Hydrolic Camshaft that is supposed to give more torque than stock. Will this all work well together? I want to keep costs down and spend as little as possible. If it wont work well, give suggestions. One guy said the 44 idf were too big. Is this true?

Go to
http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum2/HTML/003449.html It talks about this type motor. This seems to be a popular combo for a budget engine. I'm planning to build one. From what I've read on the net, Weber 40's sound like they should be big enough. Read a lot though don't take my word for it I'm totally new at this. Regie |

I had a 2.0 from a bus in my 914. i rebuilt the carbs (40mm dells) and they were too big by just a hair. as i understand 40 dells are = to 44 webbers. one step up, so ive been told.
but you might want to take som thought to goint to hydrolyic. its sounds like a great idea, but are more likely to drop a valve. thats what happend to my 2.0 [This message has been edited by Eat-um-up (edited 08-06-2001).] |

eat-um, When you dropped the valve-was it related to high rpms in the 914? I was planning on using a hyd cam also. I'm doing a T4 upright conversion and just want some good low to mid torque-don't really want to go 120mph on the interstate.

If you guys really want the engine to live, stay solid lift, leave the hydros alone..
We refuse to build hydro engines, as we see so many die every week. I know adhjusting 9144 valves is no fun, but neither is losing a cam at less than 40K miles, or not finding that stretched valve during a valve adjustment.... Doing this everyday, 16+ hours/day has taught us something, that the law of averages is against the hydro engines. Dirty oil is rough on lifters, which will grenade from contamination within their tight tolerances, also thos lifters bleed down, and really pound the valves into the seats when the engine has sat for a few days, helping to loosen seats and prepare for destruction.. The ONLY 914 engine I have ever seen drop a seat, had been converted to hydro< FYI... Everytime I post this info, I catch a hard time for it, fact is fact, and I stand behind it 100%...Even if it defys conventional wisdom. ------------------ Jake Raby Raby's Aircooled Technology www.aircooledtechnology.com |

Man, it looks like I need to go with the law of averages. My car will just be a fair weather driver anyway, so maybe the adjustments won't come along all that often. Rats-now I have to go back and read read read to figure out a good solid cam for what I'm building. Thanks for saving me from myself.

Jake Raby you've talked me out of the hydro's and now I have the problem of what solid cam I need to buy.
P.S. Thanks guys for your responses! ------------------ Duane |

Webcam 86 was recommended to me for an engine with stock heads. Power band is from 2500 to 5500.
Cofap 94mm pistons have slightly lower compression than stock US spec 914 pistons, with 2.0L heads I figured my compression to be around 7.2:1. The low compression made the carbs a little hard to tune but ran stong after everything was dailed in. ------------------ Chris 75 914 2.0L |

A web 86 works well @ 8:1, and no more..It also works well with stock heads, and ports..
It makes its peak power at 4K, and thats sweet in a low budget 914 engine.. I have a custom grind, we based off of an 86, it is sweet.. |
