I live the look of the chrome bumpers, but can't find a decent set I can afford. My '74 2.0 has fiberglass repros, but my '74 1.8 has stock painted bumpers. Has anyone ever tried chroming these? The steel seems really thin and weak. I don't know if they are a lot lighter than the original chromed ones.
Any ideas? |

Sure, its not a problem. The bumpers are the same. The paint will not bother a chroming shop at all. Had it done in the past with great results.

Chrome was an extra-cost option. It was for every year up until they went with the Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers in 75.
In 73, the 2.0's got them together with most of the rest of the options. The 1.7s still had to pay extra for them. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

Do your fiberglass bumpers have the rubber pad that goes on top of the bumper or is that part fiberglass and part of the main bumper?

Where the rubber was is now part of the fiberglass. Its a one piece, bumper and spoiler. It does not look very stock, but that car has a custom slant nose and flares, so it suits it. But I STILL Want the chrome ones for my stock 914! It looks like I will have to visit a plating shop in San Jose to get that done. Anyone know a good one?

I inquired about plating a front 914 bumper about a year ago, in San Jose.
There are only 2 shops in San Jose that do this kind of work...Faith Plating and Superior plating (off Monterey Road). Superior had the better price by a long shot, it was $325, Faith was something like $450. I did have Superior triple chrome 12 alloy lug bolts though...only $25 for the set, and the work was 'Superior'. You might find a cheaper shop in a less environmentally regulated area, even shipping it somewhere...like Utah or Nevada maybe. [This message has been edited by bowlsby (edited 08-23-2001).] |
