ok, I know that my 356 dizzy has a built in retard for cylinder 3, but is there a similar for the stock (205f?) for a 1972 914?
oddly enough it was set up with the 1 tower to the left of the advance, that is to say that 1 is just counter clockwise of where it "ought" to be. Does it make a difference? |

No, there is no #3 retard built into the Type IV distributors.
I hear that the #3 retard went out with the Type I "doghouse" cooler, since that more or less fixed the #3 overheating problems with the Type Is. The Type IV distributors never had the #3 retard. If the distributor driveshaft not oriented correctly, the distributor can be set up at another angle. It will work that way, as long as you rotate the plug wires around the cap to match the new orientation. But it's a heck of a lot less confusing if you install the distributor driveshaft correctly. (See Haynes for a diagram.) Just be careful of the washer on the lower end of the driveshaft--if it falls into the crankcase, you will be very unhappy... --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |
