Thanks guys for the encouraging words. Herman, the only fiberglass skillz i started with before this project were the one is used to shape and glass my own surfboards... basically rudimentary. I read everything i could on composites and mold making, and realized that if you know how to work with expoxies and resins, the hard part is building the shape around which the mold is built. My machine shop guy knew a guy who designed boat hulls, so i asked if he would mind helping on the project. That was the toughes part in all this was the sheer hours it took to get the lines/ and proportions right and symmetrical. Laying up all the glass (glass and more glass) was the easy part. My friend had the old-world eye when in i came to making it perfect... no CAD here! Of course now that i have glassing down, i wanted to learn Carbon! Made a 'skinned' mold from my well-waxed hood, sprayed on PVA and gelcoat, then laid-up 6 layer of Glass... voila. Tools for all this? Lots of determination, and sandpaper!

Just when i thought the glassing was over...
Well, i had anticipated throwing at least a little paint this weekend, but as usual, didn't happen. Instead, i decided that the rocker panels weren't fitting quite right. To blend the rear GT flares i better, we cut the lower anterior portion off, then fabricated a piece of sheet fibeglass to fit the gap. We then rigged up a scaffold to hold each in place with the new rocker placement (see below)

I decided to bring the rocker 'out' a little and make them more 'vertical', which would allow the porsche script to looke more as it does on the project's inspiration, the 908/3. To do this, i fabicated an extension to the upper part of the rocker out of aluminum sheet, and riveted it to rocker. The gap in the rear was covered neatly with an 'L' shaped aluminum bend, which fit the gap nicely. Hey guys, it's been a while, but after weeks of sanding, bondo, sanding, thought i would share some prelim pix from first spray. That color looks like Arctic silver, it must have been tough to choose a color for that baby. Do you have any photo shop pics of what its supposed to look like? |
Herman, thanks. It's actually classic Silver Metallic 936. As to what it's supposed to look like, hey, you'll just have to wait and see...I'm almost there.;)

Thanks guys! You may not like all the lines, but when i started this project, my goal was to capture some of the look and feel of the early Porsche racers... the 907/908/910's, raw, yet beautiful with a supreme sense of purpose. The 914/6 seemed the perfect platform

I was able to take the car out several months ago before we started into the body work, and the sound and feel were phenomenal. I still have a million little trim details to do, but should have her on the road and track soon. Hope to do some hill climbs in her this fall after a lot of shakedown time. Here is a short clip of her running just before we started on the bodywork (i have adjusted the valves, replaced the cap/rotors/wires and tuned the webers since then, so she is sounding a lot smoother).
