Hey guys, i'm sure you are sick of similar pix being posted, but here is one final with the custom-cut plexiglass windshield installed with homemade clip and rivited. We'll see how it holds up, but seems pretty sturdy. I have been welding my a$$ off in the 'hell hole' area (hence the towels draped over the side), having to basically reinforce the area with plate steel and fabricate a new battery box. Are putting all the trim pieces on, but should have her at least road-worthy in a week or less (but i've thought that before) Hope to have some 'outside' shots soon

Come by anytime. Just email me before you come. Havent given any updates, as i am just doing boring stuff before actually getting her out of the cocoon and off the trailer and firing her up. Welded reinforcement plates and new battery tray around the hell hole. Installed the front mounted oil cooler and running lines to the engine. Am Replacing the oil return tubes in the engine and making sure all oil lines are tight. I got paranoid that my chassis wasn't stiff enough, so with the advice of this board and 914 world.com guys, have been welding in Engman plates on the horizontals. As much as i am ready to take her for a spin in the summer sun, i want to make sure everything is as right as possible mechanically.

Oh, and in my free time, have been trying to get the fuel injection sorted in this beast

What is the story with the centerlocks? From what?

The project has come a long way, very impressed. Where and when will we see it on the track?

I may need to take a trip east to the coast just to see this creation. Do you still ride the Duc much? I always up for a good bike road trip.

AV, welcome to NC my friend. Am totally digging what you cats are up to in Chalotte. I met a couple of you guys last year a NASA event.

The centerlocks come from http://www.vintagewheelsus.com/ which i stumbled across when i was looking for a cost effective way to duplicate the the black Porsche centerlocks of the 70's. The whole set-up, including hubs whicih are pre-drilled to fit the porsche hub (or can be blank is you want to drill your own) is very reasonable and sturdy enough for the track. While the spoke pattern is 6 vs the vintage porsche 5, it was close enough for me. I used the 10x15 wheel for the front, and sent the 8x15 wheel to http://weldcraftwheels.com/ , who widened it 14" The work from the weldcraft guys was nothing short of spectacular BTW.

I am getting so close to getting this thing on the track i can smell the hot oil and rubber. My buddy and i have almost finished plumbing the oil cooler, and i shold be finishing the welding on Engman kit this weekend. I went after a lot of leaks on the 2.7, replacing the oil return tubes, seals on the engine oil cooler, etc. I was planning on fabricating a cable shifter to replace the crummy factory rod shifter using this guy's plan http://www.etischer.com/914cableshift.html but i think i need a little shake-down fun time in this thing before going any further

Come down to Wilmington anytime bro, and check out the car. The weather and ocean is great down here and there are plenty of chicks in sundresses and cold beer to keep you entertained. Are you going to be at the Porsche parade? If i can finish tuning the 934, was planning on driving to be there.

Just work day and night , and you'll get it done for Parade. When are we going to see the 908 on the track?

I tried the cable shift setup on my 915. Used a 3rd Gen MR2 shifter. I think I still have cables laying around if you want them. Decided to get rid of it and go with the WEVO setup. Best money I spent. Hopefully the 901 will be a better box to start with.

If you make it to Parade we'll go grab a brew. We will be around all week for Parade as a sponsor and a display booth.

Every so often I will head to Brits for a donut. Then grab the fare and head south. If I get a wild hair I'll let you know. Whenever you want to hit the hills north of Charlotte look me up.

Do you ever see a yellow 73 rsr look 911 running around Wilmington?

Jezzuz H christ on a popsicle stick... just when you think you are finished, something else comes up. I really think there is a special place in hell for PO's The oil cooler install was finished. The Engman plates were done and painted. New plugs, wires, cap, rotors and she fired up after 6 months and ran like a dream. (The Webbers + Megaphones is the sh$$!!!) All set to make it to the Parade this week, and left getting around to addressing that annoying sweak/ rattle coming from the fan/alternator to the last minute. Just needs a new belt and tightening right? WRONG! Some frigging PO hadn't put the right number of shims in, and the outer half had twisted on the fan shaft, not only cutting into and destroying the alignment (and thus rendering the fan useless to mount another pulley), but destroying th outer pulley half alignment hole as well. I couldnt see damage before, or course, as it was hidden behind the nut and shim plate. If this thing had come apart at 6000 rpm, the carnage would have been unbelievable. Anyway, had to order a new pulley half, and am using an extra 1980 fan that i have. I am going ahead with with the fire system install. On the plus side, she is oil leak free, installed an aftermarket oil pressure and temp guage. Here are some random shots with the 908 intake covers installed, and oil cooler. I promise the next pix will only be once she finally set free.

Dude this project is F'N SICK! I can't believe I haven't seen this thread yet! It makes my project look normal by comparison. Love the front end on the 914 chassis, by far the most fitting and "Porsche-like" i've come across.

Normally I don't love 914 projects but this looks to be something amazing. Promise me I get a ride when I come to NC?

Love the paint, looks like a 1950's fighter in dull aluminum...just stunning.

When you made your mold for the body parts did you just attach big blocks of styrofoam? If so, how did you attach them securely?
Thanks,
Pat

When I first saw the link to this thread I have to admit I was sceptical. But this is really a unique, beautifully conceived project. Nice.

Thanks for all the complements guys. My apologies for no postings recently. I had hoped the next post would be of her on the road. The 2.7 ran sweet, but have had tranny problems, and had to pull it. A friend who work on VW's has been working on it in spurts... looks like a bad 1st gear, so doing a rebuild. Had some issues with the front calipers as well and getting the centerlocks right as well. The summer kind of came and went, but that's the way it goes. Will continue to do detail work during the fall and winter, and put her on the road when tranny finished. Am in the middle of rebuilding my SC motor at the present, so not much free time between that and other life stuff (Job and girlfriend)

78 930 I initally attached the blocks of styrofoam with long bar stock, and then used copious amounts of that spray foam insulation stuff you buy at home depot. I didnt have a clue when i first started, but i looked like it would work and it did. I also has the added benefit of being very 'shapable' with a rotating sander and you can lay plaster on it.

BTW, if anyone is interested in duplicating what i have done, can make u a front end in fiberglass or carbon as we have the mold of course. Just email or pm me.

Some updated pix

I honestly think this is the first real car I've seen with no barrier between engine bay and cabin. Do you have any comments on the importance of a firewall?

For street driving, leaving as is. For the track, I have fabbed up a double walled stainless plate that mounts easily where the mesh is. I understand the concern, but it's really no more unsafe than the original 908s which have a laughable fiberglass/ wood divider separating the driver from engine. Don't see anyone having a problem strapping themselves into those rockets.
