efi 1.7l running in/out on 3/4 cylinders after running out of gas

I've replaced the fuel filter, but worried that my pump might be clogged from some mess residing in the tank.

Any clues? Plan on pulling the injectors & back-flushing them this weekend. My fuel filter was a semi-large (3" dia x 4" long) steel EFI unit: wonder if I filled this sucker with (possibly) rust from the tank.

the pump is usually fine as it's got large openings. nothing that big could have made it past the fuel filter.

you already replaced the fuel filter so the next step would be the injectors and the pressure regulator.

Hey Mark,

My 1.7 acted stupid like that after I first got it. I had been sitting for 19 years and ran fine for a while, but eventually the crap at the bottom of the tank probably just broke free and worked it's way to the pump and into the Injectors.

Those here may know better tricks than I; no doubt.

But here's what I did. I put some Mid Grade fuel in the tank, added a measure of Lucas Octane Booster and took the car to a safe place and drove the car until the engine simply opened up. I may have been lucky, but the fuel problem resolved itself within 3 miles.

Another old school trick I use often is to take a 2-3 foot piece of hose and put one end in/near my ear and use the other end to point at areas in the engine compartment so I can hear valves, squeaking disty, etc.

You may want to use this trick to figure out which cylinder isn't firing. That would make is easier to narrow down and then you could address that injector. No point in looking for trouble.

I'll back-flush the regulator too: good idea. I have one, maybe two cylinders that come in/out when driving: when I give it MORE gas, I have more cylinders

Car ran great before this & appears to be idling on all 4 cylinders, though poorly. I'll back-fllush the injectors & regulator, see if that resolves the issue.

What kinda lift do you have? I've been wanting one but didn't know how much they run or how hard to install.

It's a Direct Lift: they're resale company is now on ebay, selling a very, very similar lift for about $2300 installed. Drive on, drive-off: I love it, & my wife uses it as she doesn't need to worry about positioning the arms of a 2-post lift, plus, it fits in ANY garage, unlike most 2-post lifts. It's 110v, has a small hydralic motor & reservior that mounts to one of the posts: But I unbolted mine & bolted it to the wall to free up some space.
