Post Newly converted-6, back from ECR > What a story!

If you followed my experience lately, you know that it has been a hard one. But this one beats them all.

- - -

I decided to take the car to the ECR, no matter how rought it was running. Balls you say? Only a 1400KM (800 miles) ride after all.

I had a broken fan belt happening to me at 9:30 Pm in a middle of nowhere with no spare! Luckily, Marc-André Morin was with me. Him and his super-druper-tool box. He ven had a tool to hold the fan!!!!!

My local Porsche dealer isnt carrying that strap STOCK. Do you believe that? I tried bungy cable, rubber strap, panty hose (the black ones...) to no avail.

Would you believe if i say that we found one in a local auto parts store? At 10PM on a Thursday night??? Yup! A Porsche 911T one. Aftermarket but then...

Would you believe if i say that cause that hole in that firewall i made, the belt was changed in 2 minutes???

So glad i made that. And timing and access to distributor is so easy.

Any 6 or conversion should do that. I even cutted the backpad into 3 parts, removable with Velcro. Again, a matter of seconds to accesss the fan belt.

- - -

Then, tadam!!!!! I wont the 3rd place for Dave Darlings’ best choice. I think he took me by pity and wanted to encourage me. I accepted that proudly. The car is far from being perfect, but i wanted it to run to the ECR. It made it and took me back. The drive home was itchless. Except for an hour of waiting at the custom, idling. No overheat.

Please read the update on my web page soon. Thanks to all who helped at the ECR. Specially John Larson, Dave Darling, Matt Romanovski (sorry if i mispelled), M-A Morin and Michel Richard.

Pity? No way, Sabin! I was very, very impressed with the way that you got the whole car together, and drove that 1400km! Rattle-can paint job, and all.

One question, though--what were you doing with panty hose in your 914?? Or do we not wanna know?

I was joking Dave. I know you took that seriously. It was just that i wanted to prove something to myself; i am not a trained mechanics by no means. My procedures and test and try, with a lot of mistakes.

Here i have to say that if you guys (all list generally and some individually - you included) i wouldnt have make it. Thanks again.

Next year, i am planning to win the «Best 914 Update Award» since the year before....!

About those panty hose.... you know me and Marc-André.. hummm.. well you see. So long, alone on a highway, its tempating.

Thanks Dave.

BTW Will a Bosch distributor #0-231-184-007 fot into my 2.2T Your catalog is not referencing this part number.

Comme ca?

Congratulations Sabin! So, a year later and I'm still fiddly-arsin' around looking for the perfect way to re-invent the wheel with my car in bare metal on the roto hoist, while you're out in a cloud of smoke leaking oil all over the land of milk and honey in your (black) pantyhose with a s__t-eatin' grin on your face. And nearly winning a 'darling' as well...

Vive le Sabin libre!

Dave

Slowly, but that's probably not a bad thing given the recent birth of twin boys.(conceived just after purchase of Porsche - I'm not sure what the message is...) I have almost everything parts-wise, and am rebuilding the 2.0 now. It looks like I will be using 42DCNF cars from a maserati, and will enjoy this engine while I look for a six.
EVERYTHING on the car has been rebuilt, and I am now waiting for the restorer-man to resove his perpetual problems with body shop staff. (ongoing since early summer). Assembly over the winter and driving once the salt is off the roads I hope.

How did you do vs budget?
How do you like the 2.2T vs the 2.0 T4?
I stopped short of paying about $2500cdn for a fully rebuilt 0-mile 2.2T motor because of the small increase in HP and cost of oil tank etc... Should I have grabbed it?
