OK, surfing though pictures of some of your wonderfull cars and picked up on. "hey I don't have one of them!" Drivers side engine compartment under the relay box looks like a fan and paper hose. Should there be one of these on the other side because I have a hole in the sheet metal there too.

Heater blower fan...heats the cabin by running air thru heat exchangers.
Early cars had a 2 outlet fan, later cars had a single outlet fan for the drivers side echanger only, later late cars had a single outlet fan with a siamese fitting for two hoses for both sides. I have an early fan to sell if you need one. |

Hmm, So now that winter is comming I think should be somwhat of a priority. But I thought all the hot air came off the engine cooling fan like type 1. So what are the square holes for at the fan housing? Seems like someone got to over engineering something in Stutgart.

The fan assists at idle speeds...some people like heat and defrost when stuck in traffic....8^)

Yeah, when I had my bug I also had a warm jacket gloves and a hat!!! So do these fans run automatically on/off when heater fan is on ? or on all the time when ever heater is on. Gee good thing I live in Southern Mississippi winter is mild and real short. It's that summer that will kit your tail. Getting parts together for CHT / Oil temp gauges.

The engine cooling fan drives heat from the heat exchangers into the cabin when the heater/defrost lever with the red handle next to the gear shift is pulled back (which also switches the heater fan on). The heater select knob on the center of the dash routes the heated air to vents for the floor, dash, or windshield. As mentioned previously, the heater fan in the engine bay is really only effective at low engine rpms or idle when the cooling fan is not pushing a lot of air.
