R&R Ignition Switch in 1970

Need help with proper procedure to remove and replace the ignition switch and lock tumblers in our 1970 914. I tried following the pelican ignition switch tech article and at around step 7 what I see differs considerably from the directions. Any suggestions? There may be a bundled bunch of wires snaking out of the housing but heading away from the fuse block and toward the center of the dash and into a connector that clips into the underside of the dash. There is not enough slack in the wire to see or do much. I don't see how to get the turn signal mechanism out of the way or how to get around the steering wheel lock. Help please!

I have a thread on it over on 914World.com. Look for my name (markb), and there's a link in my signature.
