New person! Help questions about my engine?
Hey guys and girls! Its taken a looooong time but i have finally started on the car of my dreams. The only car that has been in my family since it left the showroom floor in 1971, my 914-4 has been in a garage since the early nineties and its time for it to roll again. Fortunately the car is solid with some rust on the underside (of course) but shouldn't be any kind of unreasonable restoration.
Anyway, on to the engine question: the original engine blew up sometime in the 80's, and was replaced with a mystery motor that was lying around the import fix-it guy's shop. it ran good until it was parked. i checked the casting numbers and i believe it is a type-2 motor (#CD008245). i'd like to run a dual carb four cylinder and get as much power out of it as i can, but i am new to the air cooled engine scene, so i'd just liek to know about what differences there are between the type 4 and type 2, what parts would be interchangeable, and whether i would be able to get any real power (150hp+) starting with this type 2 or if i should start looking for a type 4 donor? Any info or general tip as i begin the resto would be much appreciated! thanks! |

The main differences between the CD motor (a Type IV from a late Bus) and the 914 1.7 motor are the oil filler/dipstick location, and the pistons, cylinders, and heads. The CD may have a mechanical fuel pump as well?
If you want "as much power as possible", bring lots and lots of $$. There are people getting over 200 HP out of streetable Type IVs, but those are generally well into five-digit price tags. As long as you can get the oil filler and the dipstick to work, the CD crankcase will be fine. For 150+ HP, you'll be tossing the crank and rods, the pistons and cylinders, and either replacing the heads with some thoroughly worked-on ones or having yours modified very extensively. (And expensively.) One shop that can get lots of power from Type IV motors can be found at Home . They do charge for their expertise... --DD

If it is a bus motor, you can replace the heads and change the cam. It may even have hydraulic lifters, so a cam and new heads will really wake it up
