Not mechanically inclined

Anyone know a good/reputable shop in Los Angeles for 914s? I've read some of the "horror stories." I just acquired a '73 2.0 (daily driver) that needs a few things like an e-brake and shifter adjustment, as well as a tune-up. I'd like to find a good shop that knows these cars. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Would anyone recommend a dealership? There's a Porsche/Volkswagen dealership near me.

Precision Tech in Marina Del Rey / Culver City. Alex Wong. Good guy. PM me if you can't find his number.

Also 914world.com - A Porsche 914 Community / Forum / Club has tons of tech articles and such. Stop in there too.

Good luck.

Dealerships will be of little help. Hardly anyone working at a dealer nowadays was working on these cars 30+ years ago. Best bet is an independent. Interwebs and PCA are two places to look for suggestions.

You will find that after a while, even the non mechanically inclined will start to putz with their 914s. It is another way to enjoy them and to learn about a car that very few know about.

Where are you in L.A. exactly? Definitely don't go to a dealership. Unless you find a really passionate tech, dealerships won't be of much help. The younger techs learned on water cooled cars and the older techs don't want to waste their time on a car that the dealership will pay very little for. You might as well go to a gas station with a garage.

I take my Buses and my '74 2.0 to E&C in Reseda in the heart of the SF valley. 7405 Reseda Blvd Reseda, CA91335. They service aircooled VWs and Watercooled VWs and Audis. If that is too far I would look for some aircooled VW mechanics as well as Porsche mechanics simply for the sake of what they charge. No one should charge you for working on a 'Porsche' for the 4 cylinder cars. Everyone knows how to work on a VW, but it is nice when those old Porsche guys know those little things a VW mechanic might not.
