Question Timing Quiz!!! Who has the answer?

Ok guys, I just built a type IV engine for my 914. I used a 1.7L block, 2.0L crank & pistons, 1.8L Heads and god only knows where the front fan came from.
The problem is that the fan only has one timing mark. I have set the timing by trial and error for now, but I need to know if the mark is TDC or 5 deg. BTDC or 7.5 deg. BTDC to mark my fan for 32 deg. BTDC. I have three books and each one tells a diffrent story.
Hayes says that 1.7L carb. engines and 1.8L L-jetronic only had one mark at 7.5 deg. BTDC. The mark on mine seems to be closer to TDC.

Does anybody know?

The timming setting would depend on the induction system used and the cam you have. If the cam is not stock and the engine uses carbs than someting like 34 to 36 degrees total might be best. If it were mine, I would find TDC on compression and then remove the fan and mark it every 5 degrees all the way around with small notches than can be seen through the timming hole. I'd paint TDC red, every 10 degrees yellow and all the rest white and then time it. Good luck.

The fan has a bunch of blades, and four "blocks" that go from the rear half of the fan to the front half. The 1.7/2.0 27 deg BTDC timing mark is one fan blade to the right of one of the blocks. The TDC mark is another 3 1/2 blades further to the right. (Right as in toward the passenger's side of the car with the motor installed.)

How far from the nearest "block" is the mark on your fan?

Looking down at the fan from above faceing the front of the car. The only timing mark is red. It is aproimatelly 4 blades from the block to the left (drivers side).

If it's right by one of the blades, it sounds like the 1.8's 7.5 BTDC mark. If it's about 4.5 blades from the nearest block, then it's probably the TDC mark.
