FI connection Questions

Well I decided to go with the FI system so I have finally jerked the pinto carb from my car. My FI system arrived today and when I opened the box, I was worried. I've deciphered some of the connections but I need some help with any or all of these questions. First let me say that I'm putting a '72 D-jetronic on a '71. They are both 1.7 motors so I think it will work. My questions are:
1. What does the red wire on the bottom of the supplementary air valve connect to?
2. Where do the 3 sets of ground terminals hook to. (I think haynes calls them mass connections but I'm not sure)
3. There are 2 double wire connectors that I'm not sure of. One has a wire #13 and the other has a wire #32. I'm thinking that the #32 is for the cold start valve because one of the wires is out and bare as if it might be hooked to the thermoswitch.
4. Speaking of the thermoswitch, I have a sensor of some sort screwed straight down into the block right next to the distributor. Is this the thermoswitch?
5. There is a single wire connector #23. Is this the temp sensor II?
6. Where do the connections to the factory fuel pump come from?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Also, Where is the temp sensor #1 located? The haynes pic is vague and if it's where I think it is, I don't think I have one.

Before I start, let me note that Pelican has many or all of the Factory wiring diagrams available on this very site. Do a search for them if you don't like staring at the Haynes manual's version.

Now I'll try to take the questions in order.

The red wire on the bottom of the AAR hooks to a wire coming out of one of the engine wiring harnesses. I apologize for not remembering which one. The wire should be white. The other end of the wire hooks to the relay board, and inside the board is electrically connected to the fuel pump power circuit. So it is powered the whole time the fuel pump is running. The Haynes diagram should show you the color of the wire.

The 3 sets of ground terminals hook to the "multiple ground point", which is more or less a ring terminal with 3 tabs off of it. Looks something like a washer with 3 ~1/4" tabs coming off of it. This washer goes on one of the case through-bolts, usually the one at the rear (tranny) end of the case at the top.

There are a number of two-pin connectors in the FI harness. The injectors are, of course, all two-pin ones. Two others are the Cold Start Valve, which is bolted into the manifold, and Temp Sensor I, which may be screwed directly into the manifold. It is on the 2.0 cars, I'm not sure about the 1.7s. I can't think of any other two-pin connectors on the pre-75 cars offhand. Again, check Haynes to see which is which. There are small numbers on the diagram which correspond to the numbers on the wires. The numbers correspond to the ECU connector pin number as well.

The sensor screwed into the block *may* be the termo-time switch. On the 2.0, it is on a bracket off the side of the manifold, over near the distributor. Not certain about the 1.7, again. Pre-75 TTSes have a single connection, and ground through the body of the switch into the manifold and case. (75-76 2.0 ones have a heating element inside and a second connection for that.)

Temp Sensor II (Head Temp Sensor) does indeed have a single connection. Check Haynes for the wire number.

Ground for the fuel pump is a brown wire that runs through the main wiring harness to the ground point underneath the relay board. The power runs through the main harness *to* the relay board. There are two relays which control the pump power signal. One of them supplies power to the ECU, the other gets back a signal from the ECU and also uses the signal from the first relay to power the pump and the Aux Air Regulator. The 914 Fan Page has a tech article describing the fuel pump control circuitry. Check at http://www.914fan.net for details.

I think I addressed the Temp Sensor I question as well as I could above.

Good luck!!

I think the sensor you say is in the block near the dizzy is actually the oil pressure sensor. If it is screwed down into the block and has a single 1/4" male tab comming off it, then it it a oil sensor. If it is attacked to the block sideways and has a two prong (1/8" male terminals set inside the connector) plug on the back and is about 2" long it is a thermo time switch.

On 72' I seem to remember a decel vavle. I never hooked mine up and I can't remember if it is only vac hoses or if it has a electrical connection also.

best thing to do (but it is tedious) is to clean the harness and check continuity of all the wires (it is a used harness, right?) Then take the 12pin connector and lay it by the relay board, let the "set" of the wires lay them where they want to go. You will be supprised at how close they line up to the electrical components they hook up to.

When I put FI back on my car that had the same 32/36 DFEV (Pinto) carb I found the following... Temp sensor II (head temp. ) was in fact missing. The multiple ground point was gone. There were no relays or fuses in the relay board (you need at least two relays and one fuse, the third relay and second fuse are for the heater fan) and the 12 pin connector that went to the trans, starter, and ignition, was so hacked up I had to rebuild it (be warned: If you rebuild the 12 pin connector, be very careful not to mix up wires, and then recheck every thing, I caught my points on fire by reversing the polarity to the coil.)

I believe that a PO sold off his FI, that is why so many little annoying parts were gone. Add to this I was putting a 74 2.0L FI on a 72 1.7L in a 74 1.8L car, no wonder I have grey hair.
