Didn't you change the oil the day the car went on blocks? I heard that heated oil, when left in the crank case for extended periods of time turn acidic. The acidic oil will do damage to bearing surfaces. this damage will cause premature bearing failure! Are you changing the oil before starting the engine?

When starting a VW motor for the first time you should disconnect the coil and turn the motor over untill the oil light goes out, and then a couple (2-3) seconds longer because the oil idiot light is set at only 7 psi.

Besides that your plan sounds good, if not overly ambitious. Good luck.

And don't forget to look for dry-rot in the tires if they sat on concrete or in the sun. Also look close at the brake hoses, and after two years it wouldn't be bad to bleed the brakes, and in so doing, change the brake fluid. Then of coarse look out for that plane that might fall out of the sky.

I would suggest that as soon as the engine starts you move over to engine compartment and recheck for fuel leaks. The fuel will then be under pressure. Alternatively, you might want to get power directly to the fuel pump before starting the engine to check integrity of the system.

Good luck
