anyone know how to modify the 901 for the pull throwout arm?

I've tried searching the forums but can't seem to find out exactly what needs to be done to my 901 box to mount my 911 throw out fork/arm. I have a 901 from my 914, and I am going to be adapting a 3.2 engine to it. I have already purchased the forged throwout arm and bolt which is used for the pull-style clutch - but I can't seem to find the directions on what needs to be welded to the case or what other modifications need to be done to attach the new throwout arm to my case. Is welding required?

I'd greatly appreciate any information you may have. Thanks.

There was an article published in VW&Porsche Oct.88 issue on this conversion. It utilized
the 1970-1971 911 225mm pull type clutch (pressure plate, flywheel, throw-out bearing,
ring gear and disc), the 70-71 tranny case, clutch cable, clutch fork, guide tube, and the
clutch pedal shaft. Your 3.2 crank mounts a 9-bolt flywheel? You may need a conversion
flywheel which I think Patrick Motorsports carries. I have heard of modifying the 914 case
with the pivot point re-located to the proper spot. Trans builder Matt Monson may be able
to shed more light on this subject. Check with *********** also. Good luck.

Thanks Zig. Yes, I also heard that the pivot point needs to be re-located and that specifically was what I should have asked. I have seen a few posts mention that it needs to be re-located but I have not found any instructions or diagrams that indicate precisely how the modification is addressed.

It would be a lot easier if I had the 70-71 911 case, but I don't and my trans is in good shape.

Anyone have any specifics on re-locating the pivot point. Thanks again.

Well, I couldn't seem to find the October '88 issue of VW & Porsche, or the article therein, but I did find out that people have used a T-shaped fitting for the throw out arm pivot reinforcement which is installed from inside the trans case. This is apparently preferable over using a simple thread insert in the case which could potentially pull out.

Has anyone seen one of these or know where they can be purchased? I imagine it must look something like a threaded bung one would use when installing a drain in an american differential, but with an inside diameter to match the metric pivot bolt.

I have a 914 tranny case that has been modified for that conversion. I'd be willing to sell it. It is just the main case. Also have the 911 clutch cable, cable adaptor at the tranny, throw out bearing arm, and pivot bolt.

JT, that may be the solution to my problem. How was the case modified in your situation? Was it simply machined into the case or was a threaded insert installed?

Is yours an early case or the later case - what year was it from?

Would you please either PM me or email me at robrose426@att.net with information about price for each of the items and shipping cost to Los Angeles, zip code 91304. I really appreciate it.

I already have the early 911 throw out arm so I won't need that part though.

Thanks

Rob

Bummer, the magazine arrived and I have read the article.

It is a very basic overview with no real technical specifications.

I guess at this point I'll accept defeat and stick with my push type clutch for now...

Easier to get a Kennedy Engineered Products conversion flywheel. They also make a nice clutch, TO and PP package.

Joe Bob, you're right. Although there is no LOGICAL reason why I shouldn't be able to easily convert to the pull type clutch, it becomes apparent that most of my predecessors on this path have given up and simply gone with a good KEP pressure plate and clutch and stuck with the push type clutch. So rather than keep beating my head against the wall I'll just acquiesce and go with hte flow.

Anyone want to buy an ultra rare pull type throwout arm, pivot and bolt ('71) which I will not be needing?

Thanks

If I recall correctly I paid $125 for all three pieces. I'd take $100 and can ship it priority....

Sounds good to me. Can you send a photo? I take it that it is good condition.
