This takes the cake - worst 914 body kit ever!
Need I say more? -Wayne

Wow, that's really impressive!
Impressively ugly. I didn't think you could make the 917 body shape that ugly. What nauseates me the most are the interior (T-handle shifter on a 914? Hello???) and the periscope air scoop... Sheesh!!! If it weren't $7K, I'd be tempted to buy it just so I could burn it to the ground. --DD

After looking at the pictures of the interior, I think it is safe to say that it is based on a type I pan. The shifter is a common aftermarket bug design and the E-brake and heater control knob is also common to the type I. Maybe a 914 engine, not the chassis. I will agree with the seller that it will attract attention, but I not sure if anybody is looking for that kind of attention! Maybe its what the well off clowns drive at the circus

Oh, it's an ugly one, isn't it? It's right up there with the Skoda-based 911.

When I saw it I thought it looked like the VW based Lazer 917 kit car. I don't have anything against kit cars in general, but that thing never looked right to me. Now a Beck Spyder is another matter. Lets see, Beck Spyder, silver with red interior, 2270 T4, 914 sideshift tranny... Sounds good to me!

Typical 914 abortion, if it IS in-fact based on a 914. What's with that console, anyway?
No engine/drivetrain/suspension pics makes me leary of a VW-based scam in progress. $20K invested? Hope that guy doesn't play the stock market! And I thought the Coyote kit car was ugly. Go figure ...

O k this is my first post take it with a grain of salt. I have been lurking around here for almost a year. I have a trailer queen 72 914 and I like to remember the problems i had with my 914 way back in the begining. I also owned a 917 laser, different model B instead of A but still from the same builder. Personally you guys need to chill out and think about what you are laughing at. This guy took a kit designed for a rear engined vw modified a 914 to fit then went through all the trouble to get it registered ( I still have nightmares about this). He deserves a round of applause for his devotion to the 914.
Two that car is worth close to 13,000 in the present condition. I went a completly oppsite direction and started with a vw chassie and then built a frame around that but this is immpressive. he does not even have his car resistered with the 917 org and his was basiclly on his own. Three, this car will kick the snot out of almost any other car in a car show when properly detailed. No ifs and or butts. I would get offers for the car just taking it to the paint shop or down to the store for little parts. I only have that happen once in a while in my 914 when I drive it ( to shows) No disrespect to the board but these things are for looking good not going fast, I have driven lambo's with better rear visability. SO lay off. But if you want a truly track worth kit car, get a beck or vintage 550 and go kick the snot out of 996 turbos at the local autocross. Storm 72 914 01 S2k 77 917-310 |

Stormy, its ugly to me... but do whatever you like, as a car salesman once said "there is a butt for every seat".

On second thought ...
Grain of salt taken. Went back and looked the car (?) over thoroughly again. Well (no disrespect), it's STILL a POS and waste of a 914's hardware & capabilities.
There are plenty of VW pans out there to hack up; the thought a 914 gave up the ghost for this brings a tear to my eye ... I'm playing the burial dirge as we speak. A value of $13K? If he gets that much, it'll prove only one thing: that there are two happy people in a car deal; the guy who buys it, and the guy who sells it.

The Lazer "917" sure evokes a lot of emotions. At the old IMSA 6 hour at Riverside umpteen years ago, a guy showed up driving a full Gulf liveried Lazer 917 around the paddock and spectator areas. There were so many hoots and laughs that he left before the races began! Enuf said on the looks of these things

Let's see... cheesy is too nice. But let's look at some of it's good qualities.... okay.... ummmmm..... okay.... They seller says that people want their picture taken with it... Probably more like... "Okay, here I am last Spring, with the world's ugliest car". Really sad abuse of a 914. I couldn't find one thing on it that even looked like it belonged to a Porsche. The quality of the fiberglass work sucks, it's gotair ducts all over the place. Looks like a sixth-grader drew it up and his dad built it. Sorry, I won't lay off. Karl Ellzey

Yes the fiberglass is horrible. Remeber these were hand built cars and the fiberglass is over 30 years old on all of the cars. All hand laid and then chopper gunned. You need to see one in person. I took measurement of the original 917-032 that symbolic had for a while and compared it to mine. They are not that far off. 4 inchs longers and 3 inches lower in the original but they were each, the real ones, hand built affairs that have changed over time. I like the 917 not many people do. But I never would have3 tried to pass it off as a replica. Mine was a laser 917 not a replica porsche 917. ou should check out the web site for owners we have quite a few cars with mid engine chevy 350's and turbo 3.8 buicks that will destroy almost any 914 on the planet.
Enough ranting, different subject the worsst looking 9014 kit in my opinion is the F-Zero kit but thats my opinion. |

Storm, Okay.. Forgive me. I see the similarity now... they both have four wheels and they are both something I will never own. I know you like the car. You are welcome to your opinion. I personally don't care for it. No one's trying to pick a fight or anything, just having some fun. I will say that I can see it took a lot of work to take a 914 look like the Lazer and that I will give credit to the builder for that. Good luck to the seller. |

that red thing being parked next to the BFI dumpster. Some foreshadowing going on? If this were a movie, we would now know what will take place in the third act.

Speaking of movies did you know that disney ordered two 917 lasers fromj Elite enterprises to use as the evil cars in a few herbie movies.
They were built with turbo corvair motors and were painted in lack with strange red racing stripes. One of these cars resideds in the stars cars museum now. On the note of replica 917's even porsche got into the swing of thisd. The car 917-032 which won 71 le mans and was recently sold by symbolic to non other then Jerry Seinfeild, ( don't repeat that as even I am not supposed to know) porsche lost control of the car after the 75 season I believe. They had a exact replica of the winning car made and it now resides in the porsche factory museum. |

I suspect Wayne is actually coveting the car on ebay and is using this forum as a way to discourage potential rival bidders. Perhaps he is trying to corner hoping to sell them at a huge profit when they get scarce. Since they are allowing some 914's with 3.0's etc to be part of SCWDP I wonder if this car would qualify? Now I see Wayne's true purpose. Boy, this drowsy formula Theraflu really helps me put things in perspective.

I think a replica 917, even with a six-cylinder (maybe even a four-cylinder!) motor, would be a neat track car. Perhaps even a really scary-exciting street car. I certainly do love the 917 looks.
But to me, the red Laser pictured looks like a cartoon of a 917. The proportions seem wrong, the angles and curves aren't right, and it just doesn't hang together at all to me. I saw another Laser 917 in person, and while it was better than the red one (I don't think it had the periscope scoop, for one thing) I still wasn't wild about it. But it takes all types. Our 914s aren't exactly notorious for having really sexy lines... --DD
