Pertronix install issues
I have a 74 914 2.0 with a stock 039 distributor and I just bought a Pertronix Ingnitor
to change to electronic ignition. I'd read the 2004 thread re: the issues with this install and having to remove the bottom material from the rotor in order for the cap to fit properly. Upon install, it appears that this isn't going to work. I have a rev limiting rotor and not the basic unit that I've seen shown in the previous poster's thread. I have removed about as much material from the rotor bottom as I think I can and it still isn't enough. Is this a problem with the rev limiting rotor? Should I get a basic rotor instead and attempt to use that? I believe I have everything installed correctly...is there anything else I can do to get the install to work? Thanks! |

The basic rotor, after removing some material from the bottom, worked great. The rev limiting rotor is a good 1/8" taller than the basic unit....

Ok, after installing this Pertronix Ignitor and Flamethrower coil, it acts like it isn't getting good spark when I first crank it. I know the starter works; it was good before so I don't think that is an issue. It will fire but the first time I crank it, it sounds like it's not getting spark. Could it be the Pertronix air gap isn't close enough or maybe the dizzy isn't quite
seated right? I took off the dizzy cap and checked the rotor for the spring action and it seemed ok....it is very odd. After I ran it for a few minutes, I shut it off and waited for a minute or so then started it again; it started normally. I'm a little puzzled... Thoughts? Thanks! |

Sounds like an intermittent ground problem to me. Double check that all connections are tight.

Yep, the ground wire in the distributor came loose and wasn't making contact with the plate. It's fixed now!
