My steering wheel shaft wobbles in the top bushing at the ignition switch assembly. I can lift the steering wheel up about an 1/16 of an inch and move it around in the bushing. Performance Products sells a replacement bushing and bearing and a steel sleeve which slips in to shim the bushing.
My question is which of these three items do I need to cure the problem, the sleeve, a new bearing or a new bushing? It would seem sliding in the sleeve to shim the shaft in the bushing would be easiest. I wanted to see if anyone here knows about this before I order the parts. Also, if Pelican has the parts I'll get them from Wayne. |

There is a corregated type of metal bushing which is much better than the original plastic one that will cure the wobble. It installs from the steering wheel side of the shaft. PP sells them and they are easy to install. Good luck.

The different years have different ways of keeping the steering column from wobbling. I don't actually know which uses what, but I do know that there isn't a "one size fits all years" method. The metal sleeve, I think, is a 928 part and it works (foggy memory!!) on 75-76 steering columns but not necessarily the earlier ones.
Supposedly the only solution in the case of one run of model years (72-74??? Not sure!!!) is a new steering column housing. (That's the aluminum part that someone else around here polished up and had us guessing about earlier.) I don't know this for a fact, though. --DD

The Prof. Prod. catalog lists all three items (bearing, bushing and sleeve) for '73-'76 model years only. My car is a '73, so I'm going to order the steel sleeve at $14.95 and see if it works. If not I'll try the bushing and than the bearing. I'll post my results.
Don't know what I'd do if I had a '70-'72. |

You might also consider seeing if Pelican Parts can get the part for you... There's pretty little that we can't actually get. Remember (OK, everyone in five-part harmony!!) -- "Just because it isn't in the catalog doesn't mean we don't carry it."
Call up the Sales staff at 888/280-7799 and tell them about the part. I'd be surprised if they couldn't scare one up--and even more surprised if they couldn't match or beat Performance Products' price... --DD

My dad has the same problem on his 75, and we have the metal sleeve to try soon...my mechanic said that if that doesn't work replacing the bearing almost always does...but he said that they are a royal pain to get out...so be ready for some fun if you have to replace the bearing.

YES! Pelican Parts does have the sleeve and it is two bucks cheaper than PP. That is service.
