battery trays etc
i've posted this elsewhere - but let's all remember that GT's were individually built competition cars
- there was no "standard production" list of attributes and many components found on the actual race cars were probably located or sourced from "wherever" according to the specific competition venue rules and individual owner & driver preferences regarding the battery tray the battery was often relocated for weight distribution reasons in many race cars - - when i prepped my car for scca I was advised by Stoddard's to put the battery in the front trunk to offset driver weight - that was how they prepped their race cars in Germany - my GT was built without a battery tray in the usual location - nada - no evidence of any welds, bolts, et al - ever - it was in the right front trunk area when the car came to USA in 1976 - and the components & wiring for the dual plug ignition and 2 bosch CD boxes and coils lived in the "standard 014-batttery space" when i later prepped the car for VARA, and needed to put the required modern FIA fuel cell into the front trunk I removed the 914 fuel tank and put the battery in the right side bottom of the fuel tank well`and also mounted the required FireBottle into the old fuel tank area the GT's were and are race cars - the rules often change annually - and you just do whatever you have to to stay eligible |

This GT started life in February of 1970 as a factory 914-6 and later converted to a 914-6 GT by Dr. Robert Gagnon of La Jolla, CA. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320444096.jpg Dr. Gagnon enlisted the talents of Don Araki (I was told he was the guy who built the IMSA winning GTU 914 car for Wayne Baker sometime in the 80's). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320444627.jpg This 914-6 GT was later sold in 1987 to a private collector in Florida and I haven't seen it since! Below are the rest of the photos http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320444747.jpg We borrowed the idea for the reinforcement installed at the bottom of this one photo. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320444758.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320444771.jpg ...we also borrowed this modification and implemented the reinforcement modification in my GT as well. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320444796.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320444813.jpg I too think moving the battery to the front trunk is a very goo idea and almost copied that configuration, but I later decided against it since none of the factory built 914-6 GT race cars were done that way (from what I've been able to see in any period photographs). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320444829.jpg |

Saw that car in Excellence
Tangerine scream was the title. That editon is still around somewhere, all wrinkled from being read a thousand times,I am pretty sure the edition was the mode of transmission for my disease... |

Do you recall which edition of Excellence the GT was featured in? Maybe I can ask Pete Stout, I'm sure he knows. ;) PS: Now ready for shipping, picking it up tomorrow... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320460812.jpg |
Armando, I will check tomorrow when I get home.

remarkably inspiring. Thanks for sharing!

John, this is interesting. That Gagnon GT conversion actually may have infected more than just one or two. Below is a copy of an email I received this morning from Peter at Excellence... A-

The distributor was rebuilt by Jerry Woods and also converted to pointless. Thanks again Alan Kendall! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320513263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320513283.jpg Alan also kept and included all the original parts from the conversion. A nice touch. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320513296.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320513308.jpg By the way, if you ever convert any of these rare distributors to pointless ignition, be sure and keep all the points, posts, etc. These parts are NLA and very valuable to those using them in European events, where the original configuration of the distributor is more often than not required. :( Below is a photo of my other 2.8 RSR Marelli, not yet modified (see terminal posts). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320521993.jpg |
Armando,
Yeah I remember the article on the Sonauto car. It was shown being unloaded from the transport plane and shots of it on the grid at the Laguna Seca historics as well. That was the first time I had seen the wider Group 4 flares on a /6. Well I am off to work on 2188, I'm trying to diagnose a hard starting issue. Have an awesome GT day! John |
Moving on...
Thanks John, I certainly will. You may want to try using two batteries in parallel, maybe a larger starter motor. :D
Here is the car leaving 'Factory Werks'. Again, my most sincere thanks to shop owner Gary Topal for allowing us the use of his facility. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320528233.jpg ...Chris does a fabulous job transporting the vehicle. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320528330.jpg After looking at this photo, I'm thinking of possibly installing similar identification lamps on the targa top. Looks very official... ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320528342.jpg ...an intermediate stop, and until I locate the next 'talent' to finish some minor fabrication and metal restoration work. Unfortunately, my GT project will be the last Porsche Mark Spraker worked on as he moves forward with his career as a web developer... :( http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320528353.jpg I will say it again, but is not enough... YOU ARE ONE-OF-A-KIND. THANK YOU MARK! |
Propped Engine Lid Photos...
These are some photos I took yesterday while propping the engine lid in place. It's not quite finished yet, I'm dropping it off
to have the aluminum screen mesh ultrasonically cleaned and see how it comes out. I will update the thread with the results... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320638566.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320638586.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320638605.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320638617.jpg |
914-6 GT Alloy Front Hood Pins
I picked up my reproduction front hood pins this afternoon and I'm beyond satisfied with the initial results. My plan is to also later fab them out of "stainless steel".
I'll start this post with some of the factory built 914-6 GT cars and their corresponding photos of the front hood pins. Let's take a look...
