I am looking for a 2.0 to replace a previously deceased 1.7 in my '73. Of course I would like to buy (translation: find, and cheap) a '73 2.0 and am currently working on that with someone who is far away (translation: SHIPPING! ouch). I have a person locally with a used '76 2.0 and I was wondering if I could just slap it into my car with my 1.7 trimmings and no evil smog junk.

Use your 1.7 exhaust (complete), plug up the air injection holes in the heads (I hear that Bug valve adjusters work for this). And I think that's it, as long as the EFI is intact you can bolt it up and go.
