I also heated up the bushing in boiling H2O to make it my pliable (cooperative).

The old bushing is out already, right?
Don't try to install the new one around the shift rod. The bushing has to deform slightly to go into place, and it can't with the rod going through the middle. Heating the bushing in hot water will soften it slightly and can make it go into place more easily. I have heard of people cutting a slice through the bushing to install it, but that seems like an invitation for dirt and grit to work its way in and cause problems. --DD

I put my bushings in a cup of antifreeze then microwaved them, they pushed into the body with no cussing at all.
