How to clean cone filter?

I got one of those aftermarket cone shaped air filters because it's supposed to "breathe" better. Well, it has a couple thousand exuberant miles on it now, and looks kinda dirty.

Anyone know how you're supposed to clean the "washable" element? It's not a K&N, I bought it as part of adapter package and there were no instructions.

Use your preferred solvent. Mine is diesel fuel. You are then supposed to recoat the filter with a light oil. Not sure what's in those spray cans. The diesel will leave a little oily residue.

I supposed just about any oil will work. And my crankcase breathers are hooked up to mine, so they get fresh 20W50 vapor all the time....

Got it! Buy one of those pump spray bottles from one of the kitchen places (the ones for olive oil), Mark it for car use only. (If you have one, buy the wife a nice new one and use the old one. This is worth a few points!) Fill it with engine oil, pump and spray a light coating on.

James, thanks for the heads up. How much solvent are we talking about? How applied - spray on, soak, etc? Do I have to register as a superfund site?

I think the area where you live is already registered as a superfund site.

There is so much fuel dumped into that lake every weekend, I'd hate to go near it with a match.

Pelican sells a K&N Recharger Filter Care Service Kit. You may want to give that a try. How different could it be?

I'd use enough to soak them/dip them, swirl them around until they are clean. Not much else you can do. I always keep diesel around for cleaning. You might use a shallow pan and roll them around.

As to what to do with it, include it in you old motor oil, the next time you take it to the auto parts store.

don't let the wife catch you but use the dishwasher, make sure the auto dry cycle is turned off. i was refinnishing the engine tin on my car and after the simple green i did'nt want to wipe them down w/ solvent. ran the tin and got busy with something else.wife came home"kevin what's this stuff in the dishwasher?",oops.
