Question Why won't my 914 start?!?

I just replaced 1 injecter and just before I replaced it the car ran fine, and now it won't start! The car will turn over but not start, the plugs look fine, the plug wires are good, it just won't ignight! What could it be guys, I'm running out of patients!
Distrib? Contact points? Coil?

Are you getting fuel to all the cylinders. Is the fuel pump working??

you can check for spark by pulling a plug wire and, with an extra plug, ground the plug while someone cranks the engine and look for spark at the plug gap.
you can check for fuel by pulling the injectors and putting them into vials or small jars to catch the fuel. crank the engine and look for fuel in the jars.
you can recheck dwell and timing to see if they are close enough.
since it was running, i'd guess you accidentally broke or unhooked a wire when you did the repair or forgot to rehook something.
i got mine started but it runs poorly and i'm chasing the minutia

You might want to check the FI trigger points plug at the distributor. The one on our stock 914 was loose and I had it wire-tied down and it finally fell apart as it would come loose when ever I worked on an injector. I have also head of a broken injector wire or open circuit at one injector messing uo the circuit so no fuel will get sprayed but I imagine PB, the FI guru can help on this? Good luck.

Look for wires and hoses that are unplugged. On the right side, the head temp sensor wire can get unplugged and the car usually wont start. On the left, you may have had to unplug the air flow meter and other bits... And usually L-jet EFI really hates vacuum leaks, so an unplugged vacuum hose will often cause a no-start on an L-jet car like your 1.8.

Um.. John.

His 1974 1.8 914 *shouldnt* have trigger points.

I assumed he has L-jet.

Oh yea, that's the weird one. Sorry, I'd still check all connectors, especially in the area where I worked as I have done this in the past... Good luck.

Don't overlook the dreaded "seat belt interlock" of the 74 models.

It could be the jumper that was used to bypass the system has come off.

The Dreaded Seatbelt Interlock system prevents the starter from cranking. His starter does crank, so that's not the problem.

I once chased a problem for two days that was very similar. I swapped out my Crane ignition for points-and-condensor; I think I may have even swapped out my distributor... And then I found that I had bumped the head temp sensor connector and it was unplugged. Duuuuuuhhhhhh......

i've been chasing a "gremlin" causing a 1.8 Ljet to run poorly. checked compression, fuel pressure, injector output (? on that later), timing, switched out most if not all parts (ECU, throttle body with used units to test (put back orig units after no improvement), put clamps on EVERYTHING!! still ran crappy and started to get frustrated. even didn't want to work on the car for a couple of days. so today i started thinking that maybe it was a wiring problem, like a broken wire kinda thing so i had an extra ECU wiring harness and today i mapped out the connections (ECU 36 pin to each of the connectors) using Haynes and Lash books thinking that i could use that data to check the harness in the car. by the way, if anyone needs this mapping info email me type954@aol or post here. so i started checking the harness in the car and got around to the resistor pack and unplugged the resistor 5 fold connector and noticed that one of the spade connectors looked like it was pushed in as if when the PO pushed the plug together, the male spade connector was pushed out and didn't mate to the female connector (whoa... i won't go there!) so i fixed that connection and tried out the car. it runs better, can't tell how much as i can just go down the street, but am hopeful. so 1) goes to show you gotta check everything with a 25 yr old car and 2) my question: i got fuel output from all injectors when i did my fuel check but if one of the injector resistors was not in the circuit of one of the injectors (spade connector not in properly, hence poor running) how come i got fuel from all injectors? hope you get the drift of my question
