Turbo Type IV project
Hi, I'm not a regular contributor to this forum. However, I thought you guys might like to hear about my 2.0L turbo Type IV build.
I spent a while trying to select the 'perfect' combo. The biggest obstacle was the fact I wanted this engine to last 4-5 years without major attention. Hmmm, power, reliability/longevity, and cheap. Well, cheap had to go. John Connolly helped me narrow down the options. I ended up buying a set of Remmelle replacement heads. These are brand new castings, with new seats, 7mm valve stems, 45/39 valves, CNC porting and massaged combustion chambers. $1400 for Level 3 heads. Remmelle Level 3 heads The price isn't bad when you consider they're brand new and have a long life ahead. The only difficulty lies in the square exhaust port and flange. I'll be fabricating exhaust from scratch, so it's not so bad. I bought a set of bushed superlight lifters for the engine. Along with other uprated valvetrain bits, the engine's redline is increased to at least 7000+ rpm. These required machining of the case halves. 43 gram bushed lifters What else? 71mm counterweighted crank stock rods with ARP rod bolts Webcam 86a/b split duration cam (roughly .500" max lift) 30mm Schadek aluminum pump (requires modifications) heavy duty aluminum pushrods Pauter 1.48:1 ratio rocker arms Fed with a T04B turbocharger, I'm hoping the engine will start building boost at 2800-3000rpm and blast quickly to 6500-7000 rpm. Managed with programmable FI, knock sensing ignition, and water injection, I should have good adjustment latitude and safety measures. Could I have bought a 911 for less hassle? Sure, but that's too easy. ![]() Well, am I crazy? ![]() Jürgen |

Hey Jurgen,
Glad to hear your on track with you type4 engine. Have you contacted Dave Kawell in Friendship Tenn. ?? He is the VW turbo guru for many drag racers. I think we spoke about this a few years back. B |

Yes.
I can't wait to find out how it works out though. Keep us posted.

Brad, actually we chatted about 2 months ago. Maybe California months are longer, or Tennesse months are really short.
![]() I did speak to Dave Kawell. He's a great person, with loads of advice. He recommended a really large turbo. His advice contradicts that of many bench racers, but I'm still listening to Dave. That's why I'm running a T04B (good for up to 400 HP) ![]() ![]() Since turbocharged type IVs are rare, there is no blueprint for the 'perfect' engine. This has been quite a challenge. As far as the FI system, I have two choices: Autronic SMC (controls fuel and spark) autotunes air/fuel maps with a wideband sensor, or the Megasquirt DIY system (which is fuel only). I'm confident I can get the entire car together. I'm not so confident about building fuel maps and ignition curves. I've never built a header before, but I'm not scared of that work. I am scared of tuning fuel injection. ![]() If anyone has any questions or is pondering a turbo engine, give me a shout or ask here. I'll be more than happy to discuss this engine. If I don't know the answer, I'll fabricate a convincing lie. ![]() Take care, Jurgen |

You can't turbo a type 4! I had to say that before someone else did :-)

Once you have finnished, if its not too much trouble, could you take some pics of how you managed to accomplish the turbo install. Im debating weathr to go turbo or build a biger 4 or a combo of both. my problem is i litteraly have a small budget, and i get money only once i sell car parts. sooo ive got no room to work with, so making a mistake is not something i plan on doing. so if its no trouble, if at all you do it, could you email me pics? adalen@pacbell.net or porsche_914_2ltr@hotmail.com i check the pacbell one more thought.
thanks again
