There are some plastic nuts WAY up under the dash. Very hard to find and remove IIRC.
Good Luck

A clarification, I got the upper dash assembly out (the two recessed nuts in the upper section were a challenge) but am still struggling with the front. section. does the steering column need to come out?

no. I never took out the heater control levers either. (never needed to)
I was able to get all the nylon nuts out with simple tools (1/4 drive ratchet and ext., 10mm box end and fingers once they were loose. 7 or 8 or 9 nuts if I remember right. the end ones are somehow elusive, feel around and you will find them just be patient (easy for others to say) Gary

If you're taking the dash frame out--the metal frame that everything attaches to--then I think you will need to unbolt the steering column from the underside of the frame. If you're just talking the plastic dash top, then you don't need to remove the column.

There was a guy that refurbished the dash pads and the pad where the back of the targa top sits, maybe in Oregon. Check at 914world. I also remember seeing a thread on refinishing the dash pad out of a Super Beetle in the deep dark past, vinyl out of a spray can maybe. looked pretty good.

The rest of the nuts for the front section need to be accessed through the front decklid IIRC. Up by the defrost ducts you'll find more nuts then the front dash pad will come out.
I had a local guy do mine, we used color matched thread and stitched the joints for my 75 resto. Love the look. Ended up doing the seats the same as well. ![]()

thanks to everyone that responded. Everything is out but the frame and as Dave suggested I will need to at least partially disassemble the steering column if I want to take this out. I think i can work around this but i was attempting to get out as much as possible to do a complete color change to Dave's favorite.... Olympic Blue

![]() BTW, you might be interested to know that the dash frame almost never matched the body color. They seem to have painted the dash frames in batches, with whatever was left in the gun. So it is very common to find a blue car with an orange dash frame, for instance, but quite unusual (but not unheard of) to find a blue car with a blue dash frame. --DD
