2270 Engine Build (with Video link)

Hey Folks,

I've been lurking around here, I like the forum, but I don't own a 914. I have a 63 Bug sitting on a 71 IRS chassis... It's got 4 wheel discs with a 914 17mm M/C, so there... It's 914 related...

Anyways, I just installed my homebuilt 2270 T4 motor and I thought I would share the specs and videos with you guys.

2270cc (78.4 x 96)
Aircooled.net Crank
JE Forged Pistons with Jake Raby bored 94mm cylinders
SCAT I-beam rods (T1 journal)
163/86b Webcam
Aircooled.net HD AL pushrods
48x38 1.8L carbed bus heads
Dual Valve Springs
30mm modified T1 oil pump with outlet cover.
9.3:1 C/R
Weber 44 IDF's
Mallory Unilite with vac. advance.

So, if you want to see the results, check out some videos...
http://www.qtm.net/~persoj/61/exhaust_outside.zip
3.9mb

It was running quite rich and had one exhaust leak at the time. Just your typical teething problems

6.1 mb

Lots of fun...

Here are some pics and some more info on it.

Just thought I would pass on some info...

Later,
Tom

Hey Tom,

I took a peek at your pics on shop talk.. and noticed you used the solid spacers between the rocker arms from FAT. Are these identical to the factory Type4 solid spacers ?? or are they different enough that I should be buying mine from FAT ??

Brad,

I believe the T4 solid spacers (they were used on the hydraulic motors) still have a bit of "spring" in them... The FAT ones are just as solid as you can get.

The other reason for me getting the FAT ones were... I didn't have another choice. I didn't have any hydraulic spacers and the FAT ones are relatively cheap.

Mine are fat too, er, at least they came from FAT.

Tom, good to see you over here. I've spent a LOT of time reading your posts and the answers provided by John C., Ray G., Shad L., Jake (what's his name? ) and others over on STF. You guys are great! Never would have built my own w/o it. BTW, the pics of yout motor are to die for.

Thanks Zeke,

Yes, the STF has been invaluable to my success in building this motor. It is the first motor I have ever built, so I took quite a large bite, but I did it... (Minus a little indegestion and such here and there).

I'd love to see what this motor would do in a 914 or 912... I have never driven a 914 (I have a 912 and 911), and I am in love. I built this motor so I could drive it with the Bug for a while, then upgrade to the Porsche camp and swap the works over.

In the Bug, it's a riot to drive. Most of the times I get out of the car shaking and laughing to myself. The neighbors must think I've gone over the deep end.

Welcome! I'm a lurker at STF, and like Milt, have been following your progress there. Happy to see you posting here.

Hey Tom,
My car 914 is almost completely assembled minus the motor, I'd be more than happy to let you put it in my 914 to give it a try. I think I still have your two way, I'll bump you some time this weekend, I would love to come over and go for a ride! OBTW I'm the Randy that met you at the Lansing show! I may pick your brain on my 2.0 rebuild, I was debating on going bigger, but was unsure if I wanted to, a ride in yours may make up my mind!

Tom,
That looks like a a lota fun.
Is it safe to say most of the parts were from AirCooled.net?
Who did the machining?
What size engine/case did you start with, 2.0?
Sorry for all questions but you just built the engine I want. I'm in the process of rounding up the pieces for it.
Thanks

Yah, most of the parts did come from AC.net, Jake Raby bored my 94mm cylinders, and Rimco did the heads.

What size engine/case did you start with, 2.0?

The case is a 1.7 from a 411, the heads are 1.8L carbed bus heads from Ebay. I needed a 2.0L crank and from AC.net a 71mm stroke costs the same as a 78.4... So, I went from a 2056 to a 2270 pretty quickly.

I'd probably get H-beams rods the next time around, I guess there isn't as much clearancing (if it all) with them compared to the I-beams.

Granted, the clearancing I did was very minimal, it was just to make me feel better... I touched up the case where the rods swing past and I had to touch the rods to clear the cam better, that gave me a good excuse to balance the rods anyways.

Later,
Tom

Tom, Glad to see you here...

I'm glad I was able to help, people just don't understand to put one of these together without oil leaks and all sorts of problems....I think you can agree that its all in the combo....

You can see first hand why I say the 2270 is the absolute best TIV engine that can be built, and that cam is one bad puppy, I wonder who thought it up?????LOL

Yah, that 163/86b cam really does rock. I can't believe how it pulls so hard down low AND has top end like no other.

I have pulled some RPM's with it so far, around 6000 and it is STILL pulling hard... I love it.

Oil leaks are inevitable, I tried my hardest to avoid them. I think one of the tricks is cleanliness... I buffed all of the pushrod tube bores with steel wool and that has made a big difference.

It's dry as a bone, and that makes me feel good.

We should all be lucky we have forums like these and such knowledable help aboard.

Too bad it's only aroun 45 deg here today...

Tom that nice dense cold air makes power from hell, but isn't good for traction.

You should see a version of a 2270 with an 86B/86C cam and 10.5:1 our heads with correct valve margins, and some 48 Dells....Hello 180+ on the dyno!!From 3 to 5 K you better hold on.

86b/86c? That sounds like one hell of a combo, plus 10.5:1!!!

Wow, impressive...

Traction is always limited... It spins the tires with the greatest of ease. Pulling out into crowded traffic is always a treat. I usually end up semi-sideways and tearing up the tires... But, it puts a smile on my face.

I have a set of really worn Yoko AVS Intermediates on the rear, so I don't mind spinning them hard - They are getting closer and closer to slicks every time I drive it. Once the belts start showing, it's time to change... LOL

Randy is stopping by tomorrow to take her for a spin (literally), I can't wait to see what his thoughts on it are.

Later,
Tom
