Diy engine rebuild resource

Can anyone recommend the best diy engine rebuild source / manual. Something along the lines of Wayne's 911 rebuild guide?
Let me know as I plan on digging in soon with my engine and suspension rebuild 2 or more source is fine for specific things.

How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine by Tom Wilson. Good starting point.

Not sure what a type 4 engine is.. This is a bone stock 1973 2.0 GA# 1971
Would that be considered a type 4? If so I will buy the manual and keep trolling online.

The 914-4 engine is based on the Volkswagen Type IV engine, which was used in the later Buses and the 411 and 412 cars. The Wilson book addresses the 914 specifically in several sections, which is nice. (Don't get confused by the wording on the cam/crank setup, though!)

I would also recommend using the Haynes manual for the 914 for things like torque specs. That book is a word-for-word copy of about 80% of the factory workshop manual, but in a much more compact and easier-to-carry form. The photos are for the most part also lifted directly from the factory manuals.

For more detail on wear tolerances, torque specs, and so on, another excellent resource is the "Tech & Spec Guide" (available on that same page above). The factory published the "little spec book", which is a small book with a lot of specs in it, but those are NLA. The Guide is, I think (?), a copy of that.

Finally, the tech articles on this website, this forum, and the similar forum on 914world are invaluable resources. If you get confused by something you see in the manuals, take pics and ask!

Shoot, how could I forget that one??? Yes, the video is good to have especially if you're a visual learner! It shows how a pretty stock rebuild goes when you have lots of elves behind the scenes who make sure everything is cleaned up and measures out properly. (Or if you do all of that work while the camera is off--but I prefer to pretend it was elves!) And when there are no surprises.

This book is also a good starting point for the beginner. It doesnt cover the 914, but VW's in general. Its fun to read just on its own.

+1 for McMark! If you decide you don't want to tackle the rebuild, he can do it for you. He knows 914s inside and out, as well, so if there is work you can't do or don't want to do, he can.

I just finished rebuiding my 911 motor top to bottom... and it runs So the 914 motor doesn't scare me..
Looking forward to actually...
Enjoy learning.. Going to try and tack some of the body work as well. but depending on skills and learning may farm that part out. So any good reasonable bead blaster/ primer folks would be appreciated.

Sheesh, do I sound arrogant in that last post now that I read it. Not intended. I appreciate all input and advice. Couldn't work up the courage to do so without this forum. So thank you all for your input and recommendations. I received the the engine rebuilding book today and have been reading through it. Great stuff. Makes me realize how little I know and the reading is prompting more questions.
Buckle up 914 brethren. Lots ore questions to come.
