rustoleum bug
A buddy of mine just finished painting his super bug with yellow rustoleum. He bought a gallon can, and used a spraygun. The finish actually looks pretty good (some orange peel). has anyone ever done this. How long do you think the shine will last.

I don't know about how long Rustoleum will shine; it doesn't ever seem to dry and might not be that durable. You can get real auto paint from these guys at decent prices, and if you want to go cheap buy one of the premix PPG OMNI colors without a hardener. If you spring for the hardener you'll get better gloss retention, but make sure you use a forced air respirator.
www.autobodydepot.net They also have color charts with most of the 914 colors in them under Volkswagen for the same years at a sister site www.autocolorlibrary.com

Ruddyboys,
Worked at a company that had a materials/finishes PHD and he claimed the actve non-rusing ingredient in Rustoleum is FISH OIL. Since this dude taught me a lot about finishes, adhesives and coatings, I would tend to believe him. He was our Guru for surface prep, finishes and adhesives for aerospace and spacecraft applications. Also claimed you couldn't paint over Rustoleum as the fish oil prevented any good bond from forming- even after a really good cleaning. Apparently the fish oil liked metal pores/pits and was a pain or impossible to remove. Personally, I use finishes specifically for automobiles and completely derust the parts. I like the Dupont c atalyzed products and the basecoat/clearcoat systems for gloss. Take care, Ken |
