First 914 2.0 L engine drop
This is my first post. I am about to drop my first engine. Can anyone tell me how much clearance between the car and the floor I need to get a 2.0 L engine out from under the car. My jack maxes out at 21 1/2 inches with a 2x4 block on it. My jack stands are 16 3/4 inches high. I plan to use a motorcycle jack to move the engine.

You should be good. I mean, I can't speak to the height of your particular motorcycle jack (I use a furniture cart), but my jackstands max out at 17" and jack at about 20 inches. I've done it a couple of times without any issues I can recall.

Thank you. The engine removal article is excellent, but it does not state the clearance required.

You should be prepared to pull the intake, distributor cap, oil filler, and dipstick off the motor. That will give you a good bit more clearance if you turn out to need it.
The motorcycle jack will eat up about 3"-6" of clearance as well. I've seen palettes, carpet scraps, creepers, and floor jacks also used. The flatter the support, the more clearance you'll have. --DD

1st stage - jack up and put stands under car, with blocks underneath. (medium height) 2nd stage - lower jack, place thick block on jack pad, re-lift car even higher, raise jack stands to highest setting. It'll be easier than trying to re-lift the car once you have the engine halfway out... |
