Speedometer Drive Help

My speedometer angle drive is leaking badly on my newly acquired 1970. I order these parts 999-701-084-50-m104 O ring and 999-113-036-50-m260 shaft seal.

I have no idea how to install that seal, anyone done it?

Cheers
Tim

Hi. I am working on the same problem. See advice from Dave her: 914 speedo angle drive seal replacement
So far I cannot get the silver steel ring out to get to the seal despite pulling so hard I nearly tore my thumb off and eye out when my pick slipped. I am thinking to rig a "puller" from a heavy screw ground down and a washer to bear against the opening of the aluminum body. Will let you know if it works.
If you have had any luck - please let me know!

Just keep prying with a pick

I used this pick to pry out the washer, put the unit in a vise with aluminum jaws and tried to work it out a little bit at a time, then wham out it flew. Unfortunately it deformed the washer and had to order a new one.

If you go over to 914World.com one of the regular shop owners McMark of Original Customs actually modifies the speedo drive to accept an additional O-ring, like above, and that reportedly stops leaks all together. This is a very common leak point on our cars and this modification is widely known and used. Good luck - we all hate leaks.

Finally got this settled. I ground down a carriage bolt so it was wafer thin and got the ring and seal out without scratching the aluminum barrel. After hours of working on it the new seal and ring went back on in 5 min. Did not go for the double o ring version for now. The old oil was so nasty I figure we will clean it out and in a few months refill again. Just in time for a $65 birthday present ...
