Interest in different 4 bolt pattern hubs?
This would allow one to purchase a much greater selection of quality aftermarket rims in almost any size (15"-18" wheels)
Many of these Honda rims have a 38 to 40mm offset.....to get a 7" rim under the stock rear fenders, a 35mm offset is perfect or about as perfect as one will get with these cars One option would be brand new /4 front rotors drilled/spotfaced with new 12mmx1.5 studs of appropriate length with redilled /4 rear hubs (used of course) with same studs. Nothing wrong with the Porsche rims., but this would give one more choices. My personal favorite right now for a good lite rim is this one which cost in the 140 dollar range: ![]() |

A completely personal opinion: Looks like a ricer wheel, leave it on a ricer.

Having another option is always nice. I've always been partial to the Mille Miglia line. Being able to add 7 inch rims and keeping the fenders stock would be fantastic.

Now that I have performed the 5 lug conversion to my 914 I would not think about doing anything else, however. . . it took me almost three years to gain the know-how, and the $$$ to do it. Before it was done I went through Rivieras, Mahles, EMPI's, stock steel, then back to Mahles looking for something I liked. The answer turned out to be 5 lug fuchs that I liked.
There are definitely some interesting options out there, and while I believe EVERY 914 should have the Porsche 5 lug, this would be an outstanding stepping stone, if not a permanent solution to the problem of the drab, skinny, and limited selection of 4x130mm wheels out there. Just my $.02 Chris

I think it would be a great option to have, especially since those wheels are probably easy to buy and sell with all the honda kids around.

I would be interested in this if there was a kit. What to you think the widest rim, that would fit in a stock fender would be?

I'd really like to get a different bolt pattern so I could get more wheels, but I'm not big into anything less than a 5 spoke.....Until I get some more money I'll just stick with my stock rims though.

Only four lug? I was hoping you would offer 3-lug. I've got a line on some old Citroen rims...

Aloha,
I think I would switch to a newer bolt pattern. That is one reason why I am a little frustrated with the VW scene. Most of the Cal-look Bugs you see out there are just carbon copies of one you saw last month. They all use about 4 or 5 different wheels, and its get old. Fast. There are a lot of new style rims out there that would look awesome on an old VW or Porsche. I think if you're really into getting the most out of your car, you'd make the modification or at least consider it, as the newer bolt pattern gives a person far more options than what is currently available for 30 year-old cars. Just my opinion. ~Joel PS - I think a lot of "ricer" wheels look better than a lot of "status quo" wheels. Just a personal opinion. |

ya I'd have to agree the same wheels all the time get boring....but some purists don't understand that it doesn't necessarily need to be their way or the highway...

The biggest wheel that would fit reasonably under stock fenders would be 7" wide. Maybe as tall as 17", much less sure on that. Max tire width of 205, generally, though some 914s won't fit them and a lucky few (very few) may fit more.
7s are tougher to fit than 6es or 6.5s, as they will tend to make the tire stretch a little wider. You may need to mess with the exact offset or backspacing, plus mess with the camber, and maybe pull the fender lips out a little... The above is the case no matter whose wheels you use. --DD

Aloha,
Regardless of what people can fit under their fenders, I think for the sake of aesthetics it would be nice to just see some different wheels on older cars, other than only what was available 30 years ago. ~Joel www.aircooledkings.com |
