what color is your tin?

I just looked at hot rod vw mag and it looks like a lot in that crowd have made a big deal out of color coodinated engine tin. Does this make any sense for a 914? Do any of you have any pictures of engines your proud of? What other parts look great when in color? I'd like to see what color I can add to my engine bay. Recently found out that a friend has his own powder coating oven and have been thinking what parts may be better off in color too. Any suggestions, or pictures?

Thanks
Dreberg

Hah. I have orange tin in my yellow car. Apparently the PO didn't think anybody would notice the difference, and it doesn't bother me enough to take it all out and paint it.

Painted mine red, but it is a PITA to keep it clean. I was thinking of getting it gold plated and doing the door handles and fender lips to match. You know fuzzy dash, skinny tires, seats laid back (in a 914?) one of those steering wheels made out of chain welded together....

I second Milt (Zeke)!

Just had mine powder-coated black. It looks great & is durable. Other paints just don't hold up. Its a nice touch, but I don't think I would attempt to match my Ravenna Green exterior (unless of course I had one of those Jake Raby specials).

My $0.02

This yellow picture isn't my engine, but I like the clean, contrasty look of it.

I think the engine bay tin looks the best as either stock stain black, or body color.

My white car looks pretty clean with its white engine bay and black tin, but my black car with its balck tin is a dark hole...any ideas on how to brighten it up?

My engine tin is a dirty brownish-black color. 26+ years of dirt will do that.

Hey Bowlsby,

Who manufactures/sell that linkage? That's what I have on my car (I bought it all used) and I need new bushings for the center bar. Anyone know what kind it is?

Thanks,

David

Norustscott,

Color does not affect outgoing radiant heat, only incoming.

Forgot to add,

My fan housing, oil filler, and pushrods are body color yellow. Its just a touch of color and I think it looks pretty good. The Yellow pushrod tubes bring a little color to the underside.

Porsche Crest Painted mine to match...

the car color.

The PO had painted it red and it just didn't look right in an orange car. I had thought about satin black, but truthfully, I want to know where the crud is coming from. With the brighter color tin, the contrast really makes the FI and the rest of the engine compartment really stand out.

Plus, if I want it to stay looking good, I will have to keep it clean. A clean motor is a better running motor. Black tin would make it too easy to ignore. I'm lazy that way.

bander,

My reference was that I was once told the a light cost of black paint in aircoled cylinders helped heat transfer...could be crap. sounds like crap...I would think a thin coat of anything would be and insulator...
