Are the 914/914-6 manuals no longer produce now
I remember seeing some threads here and there. Is Porsche not producing these now or is that just rumor. I was about to call around for some but figure I would ask first, before calling.

I've had a set on backorder from PP for about 4 months and I don't expect to ever get them. They come up on e-bay once in a while but usually get bid up pretty high. I was high bid on a set about three weeks ago and they were virtually new and unused so I was pretty happy since I paid less than other sets I'd bid on and didn't get. I hear rumors of the manual's on cd but I've yet to see an actual disk.

in my opinion, the Haynes, Lash... and all the others are as good as the workshop manual. at one time, the workshop manual was posted on the mittlemotor web site and you could use an internet based translator to translate into rough english. someone recently posted a wanted ad for the WS manuals and i looked for the mittlemotor site but couldn't find it. i bookmarked the WS manuals but..... must have taken off i guess due to copyright. best manual i ever bought was the parts manual with all the breakdown pictures of all the systems of the car. need diagrams pertaining to 1.8L and 73-74 2.0L though. still, parts diagrams are located on AA site and mittlemotor site for the downloading. my porsche had manuals for ~$340 set. not worth that $ to me. i bought mine at ski roundtop before it became hershey but honestly, don't refer to them that much.

The manuals do have some advantage in certain situations - the transmission, 6 cylinder things, etc.
They are missing key some information that is extremely important - like a wiring diagram for the 6 cylinder. If they are discontinued it would be a shame. There are no CD versions that I know of or that are licensed. There are a few "aftermarket" picture diagrams and things. Even AA's old catalog had some interesting diagrams and things, probably stolen from the manuals. James

The parts diagrams in the AA catalog (as well as several other catalogs) were taken directly from the factory parts books/microfisches. Those images are now in the PET CD, BTW. (A dealer-only item that was hacked to be useable by anyone and copied a number of times.) The parts diagrams seem to be useable by people selling Porsche parts--at least, PCNA hasn't come down on AA, or AJ-USA, or any of the other outfits that have been using those line-drawings in their catalogs.
It would indeed be bad if the manuals were not available. I too have heard rumors about a CD-ROM version of them, and may have actually seen one at one point. You know, if they really have gone out of print, maybe Pelican should try talking to PCNA about getting the information out there some other way... Or perhaps the clubs should do so; they have traditionally been allowed to use more factory information than aftermarket businesses such as Pelican. --DD

The cheapest alternative would be some sort of locked PDF version on a CD. It would allow you can print out the page and get all the grease on it and throw it away when you're done. I have considered, for personal use only, scanning and making PDF's of the manuals. But that would be quite a bit of work.

At the Porsche Parade in Sacramento a few years ago I asked a couple of the factory folks in attendance why we couldn't get CD-ROMs and it was illegal copies they were worried about getting made and distributed. I had done some numbers of what I thought would be a fair price $29 and how many copies they would sell, if 75% of the owners bought it (rest copied it illegally) and it was about 10,000% more than they make in manual sales. But it is just a drop in the bucket for their sales items so it will never happen!

Then they should license it to someone who would do it. Why would they want to keep track of all of the old manuals anyway? This would be a good way for someone to make a buck, plus they make a buck and you and I get some needed information.
Plus, maybe they'll find the wiring diagram for the 914/6.... James

You know, James, I would be very surprised if there wasn't a CD out there already with PDFs of the factory manuals on it. Plus scans of the B&W 914-6 wiring diagram, color -4 diagrams, maybe some owner's manuals, and so on...
I'd be really surprised. --DD

Sounds like Dave knows more than he's saying. Any clues on how some of us could get surprised also?

A few hundred for the 914 or 924 manuals. Several hundred for the boxster and 996 manuals. Advantage to CD manuals - you can index them by repair group and print off what you need - rather than having the whole book under a dripping engine. AFJuvat

Does anyone have official word from Pelican about whether they are ever getting more?

Lucky me, I just bought a full set of 914 factory manuals. There are a few extra copies of the chapters so i will be selling a used incomplete set soon, the extras do include engine, transmission. Maybe one of you guys want them off me.
