ANother question.....

I am going to get a lower temp thermostat only because I'd rather see the needle on the left side of noon than right. What temp should I get? Down here in the south, it gets extrememly hot in the summer and often on the interstate I get stuck in traffice going to and fro work. I am also going to get a lower temp thermoswitch, too, so anyone one know which one to get?

Thanks.....

A lower temp thermoswitch will run your fans longer and if you have any problems in that system, will run your battery down to zero. Most times the lower temp thermostat is enough in hot climate. My 2.5 cents on this thread!

Good idea. Guess I will just try a lower temp thermostat first, then go from there....

never thought of that....and I can see that is something to be concerned about. So, I guess when the fan comes on at the 3/4th mark, it is still good, right?

I bought the lower temp thermo switch. I havn't installed it yet I will let you know how it works out. When I can get around to replacing it. My car was running hotter and the thermo switch sounded like a good remeedy. Then one of the fans died and I had to have it replaced. I also cleaned the grounds and now my temp guage doesn't go past half way. The lower thermo switch is the way to go it turn on the fan earlier and try to keep the collant temp about 25 degrees cooler. Lower temp thermostat is only going open up the coolant flow to the raidiator and heater core earlier. I will allow the engine to warm up slower, but shouldn't do anything to lower the overall temp.

If you need to do anything more than adding a thermostat and maybe changing out to a six bladed fan, there may be something else wrong with your cooling system that needs to be located, Replace coolant if its old, get a new cap that holds pressure, locating a bad hose that is releasing pressure, possible bad head gasket,, etc. If you need that lower range fan switch, you have other problems. Been there, done that.In the long run its better to get something fixed than finding a band aid to put on an arterial bleed..Sorry, venting tonight

I have the low temp thermostat in my 85.5. Runs well here in Florida. I would consider the thermoswitch as well - if only they made one for the 85.5+ cars.

Any car that is as old as ours (all 944 are at least 12 years old now) could definately benefit from a cooling system "overhaul" - checking connections, removing corrosion from hose fittings, tighten/replace hoses as necessary. Even a tiny leak will cause odd temp readings

I don't agree 100% with Gordon, depending on where you live and your driving habits, even a well maintained system can still benefit from a lower temp thermo and switch - in stop and go traffic in the middle of summer here in FL, you can be up to the 3/4 mark in no time at all.

I have the lower thermo and the lower temp switch. Installed them at different times to see how they helped. Thermo was a big improvment, and the switch really brought me peace of mind in traffic because it kicked on before the queezy feeling wodering if the fans were gonna work kicked in. My 2&cent

I also flush my system 1/year and use water wetter and water pump lube, both of which I could tell improvements.

Ok, Ok.. Its a conspiracy Ill put the lower temp fan switch in this weekend ( If its not raining ) Its just that I lost an engine on one of my 924's when I thought the lower temp fan switch was the solution to my overheating problems. It ended up being a bad radiator and a bad hose but this all caused a blown head gasket and ultimately an engine rebuild ( my first 924 )
