Power steering problems
I just recently purchased an '87 944. And am now starting all the maintenance needed on any used car. One problem I'm having is that I'm losing a lot of power steering fluid. Their is no signs of leakage around the reservoir and their is no fluid build-up under the car when it's parked. I'm getting my repair manual in the next few days, but any suggestions on where to look would be appreciated.

My '86 leaked its PS fluid, but it was obvious because it came out fast. It leaked at the seals in the rack. There isn't much piping, and there aren't many hoses so it should not be too much of a problem to find the leak. It sounds like it only leaks when it is being used. Still though, something should be wet underneath the vehicle if it is losing fluid. Try idling the motor at a good clip, then turn the steering wheel with the car stopped motionless to see if that will cause some fluid to hit the floor.

Try sliding back the protective boots at the ends of the steering rack. Careful, you probably will dump quite a bit of fluid.
