Shift Boot

I wanted to check how many people have replaced their original shift boots and if so how. I want to replace mine but I dont know the procedure. I just got my 944 5 weeks ago and I am fixing it up.

It's easier DONE then SAID!

Ok, instructions come with it, if you're precise with your hands, it shouldn't be a problem, I changed mine before, and a friends... Takes a while, but if you're patient, it's no biggie.

BTW, instructions tell you to use glue, but on mine this wasn't necessary, since the boot was fitting quite snugly on to the shifter. It's been a little over a year, and I don't see anything wrong with it,

Good luck,
Ahmet

I've done three! (on three differnet cars btu still)

anyway, it is time consuming working the leather into the hole at the top but is is not by an means technically difficult.

First you have to pull the boot and its trim ring away from the center console. The boot is wrapped around the ring, and the ring is flimsy so be careful.

Then you have to pull down the rubber inner boot to expose the clip that holds the handle on the shifter. Remove the clip and pull the shift boot and handle off the lever.

Now that you have the handle an boot out of the car, you need to pry the little cap off the top, the catches on this a flimsy to so again be careful.

Now remove the old boot, and work the new one on. This is the hard an time consuming part becuase you have to put the cap back in the top and... well, you'll understand when you do it.

Repeat the whole mess to put it back together.

I'm planning on getting a boot myself. Is it easier to get the two piece or one piece? Thanks

Yeap, my car is awesome alright... You couldn't duplicate it even if ya'll wanted to... So EAT MY DUST! My car runs the quarter mile in umm, very fast. It stops in, a very short distance... Umm, it also like turns, very umm smooth, I mean fast, but smooth first so it's fast or something like that...

I put a one piece on. The only problem I had was getting the top to stay in the holewhile I was putting on the gear pattern piece. The easiest way was using a little contact cement around the top, then it went on like butter.

I've replaced the boot and the shifter to accept a 14mm shift knob. The boot / shifter is unique to the 944, so to get an aftermarket shiftknob, you need to replace the shifter unit. The website is: http://www.rpm-d-avant-garde.com/944_shifter.htm

You can then put any shift knob on your want. The procedure for replacing is included with the new shifter. The 944 style boot still worked, but has more leather left over, but I just rolled it down into itself.

Karl.

What is the difference between the one and two piece design? Mine has a rubber boot separate underneath the leather boot. Is that the two piece? If so, are there any advantages to either setup?

TIA

I came across that aftermarket shifter website a couple of months ago, and have been wondering about it. What do you think of it, and did you get it because your stock shifter needed to be replaced, or just because you wanted to 'upgrade'?
Someone else mentioned before that it is clearly much taller than the stock shifter. Does it stick up any farther than stock with the proper shift knob attached?
I would also like to hear if you know anything about the short shift kit that place sells.

I replaced my shift boot. It was kind of frustrating trying to slip the boot through the knob but I got it. I used no glue.

All 944s use a 1 peice boot/knob combo. The two piece that everyone is referring to is for older 911s that had a shift boot and a separate shift knob.

I have actualy repaired my shift boot instead of replacing it. maybe i'm just thrifty, but i think it almost looks better this way. here's what i did.

I removed the boot from the car, and cut off the top portion. I folded it inside out, and where i cut it, i folded a small bit(1/4") over onto the inside, and using a heavy leather needle and thread, stiched the top around the opening. I folded it right-side out, and slipped it over the bottom of the black portion of the knob.

When i cut it, i left it about 1 1/4" above the bottom of the black portion of the knob.

I never liked the 944 boot that went all the way around and over the knob.

If anyone wants to see a picture, i'm sure i could get one up on the web somewhere.

Mike

BTW- i'm certanially not good with a needle and thread, but unless you look at it real closely, it looks great. besides, at that speed, you shouldn't be looking at anything but the road.
