Question Problem with Pop-up Headlights

My pop-up headlights don't come up when I want them to. At night, when I turn on the engine, and twist the headlight knob all the way to the right, I can see the lights come on, but they don't pop-up. When I drive for about 2 minutes with the knob in that position, the lights usually pop-up. In addition, when I try to turn them off, the lights turn off, but they don't go down. The complicated part is that it is completely random. Some days I'll be able to turn the knob, and they work as intended, the lights come on and they pop up at the same time. Other times, I have the problem of the lights not popping up. Has anyone else had this problem or know what might be wrong?

Thanks

Try cleaning or replacing the relay on the motor. First guess is dirty contacts.

Mine did that and it was the switch. If I would push the switch towards the dash once they are on they would come up. try that and see what happens.

Been there! I noticed that if I pushed on the little silver box (relay) next to the motor, up they came! Watch the hands! I just cleaned the relay/plug and they have been working flawlessly ever since.

Thanks guys, especially Eleg. I just left my lights up last night because I couldn't get them down after turning them on and off a couple of times. I just tried pushing on the "little silver box" and the lights went down! I guess I need to go clean that area off and see if that solves the problem for good. Thanks!

Also replace the rubber boot if yours is torn or cracked. You will need a special metric tool to push the pins out of harness connector.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Where can you get those rubber boots from? I need one too but haven't found anyone that carries them.

Try the dealer.

The pin removal tool is a common item at well stocked autopart stores.

Search here for a thread on replacing the 944 mirrors with ones off of a 968. Think there is a manufacturer and part number.

I've had similar problems. Quite often laately when I turn off the headlights, they will go down but come right back up again and repeat this ludicrous maneuver ten or twenty times before it stops. I'll check the relay now that I know where to look but if someone else has had this problem and had to solve it in a different way, let me know.
