Power Window Problems And Solutions
I just looked at previous topics concerning power window problems and did not find any answers. I own a 1983 944 and the passenger window operates very slowly and the driver's side window is not much better. I am beginning to think that I need two new power window motors. Now for a dumb question. What the heck do the power window regulators do? Could they be the problem? Does anyone know where I could look to get instructions on removing the door panels to access the motor and regulator? I have seen these items on eBay from time to time and for very reasonable prices. Should I stray away from buying a used motor or regulator even though they "tested good and come with a 30-day warranty". Thanks in advance!

My early 944 windows go up and down fast enough, but will clunk like they skip a gear tooth at mid travel, sometimes requiring a push to continue closing, could this be a "regulator" problem or is it something simple to fix like a loose fastener?

I have an '83 also. The windows were slow, the motor kinda moaned. The Haynes manual has the panel removal proceedure. I greased the tracks, silicon sprayed the rubber guides and lubricated all the pivot points. I also disconnected the electrical connectors ( from the switch to the motor) cleaned them and coated with di-electric grease. This got them to work satisfactorily.
Good luck and aloha, Neal |

The (power window)problem describing slippage and having to assist the window glass, is a worn regulator gear(sprocket). The solution is replacing the regulator. Insure all pivot points are lubricated. The motor speed can also be related to charging system efficiency, load, and or battery state of charge.

I agree with what most everyone said. The FIRST thing you should do, is grease/lubricate all of the moving parts. Cleaning the electrical connections is a good idea also. Try these first, as replacing a regulator isn't a fun job. I would rather replace a clutch, than a window regulator.
Lambic, if you don't have a Hayne's manual yet, put it on your list. It covers everything you want to do to your car, including removing the door panels. It doesn't really cover the T-belt, and balance shaft belts though. |

If you hear a clunk during raising & lowering one of the arms is probably poping out of the track. the little wheel in the track has probably come off the ball in the arm.
