Shaun, if I'm going to street race, it's going to BE AT NIGHT. Reason..there aren't going to be people out on the road. There won't be as many cops, and if there is a cop, it's SOOOOO much easier to out run them at night..trust me, I know. I've had 5 tickets, and only 1 of them was at night (I pulled over to put the Sunroof in my car because it was raining, and a cop that I didn't know was chasing me pulled in behind me).
5 Tickets, 78 / 65 (was 16) <--Riviera 45 / 35 (seems pretty lame to me) <--Riviera Failure to Stop at a stop sign (I did stop, couldn't beat it in court) <-- Riviera 55 / 45 (the sunroof night, thought I was in a 55 zone, 12:30 at night) <--Porsche 79 / 65 (was following traffic, but 5 Cops pulled 5 people at once, I was one of the unlucky) <-- Riviera 5 Tickets, listed in order of appearance. The last 4 were in the last 18 months. If I get one more before May 15th, I loose my license. Am I a bad driver? Hell no. Do I race on public roads? Well, sometimes, on a nice long stretch of high-way without a soul in sight. The thing is, I drive fast (faster than the average bear), and the cops have never gotten me for those. And there are plenty of people out there who drive a lot faster than me, and have CLEAR records. Cops aren't trying to DETER these people from speeding, they're trying to build up the revenue. The state governments would DIVE BOMB if people stopped getting fined for broken laws. They'd have NO MONEY. Raise my damn taxes and raise the speed limit. It'd be worth it to me. As for previous comment about driving less agressivley after AutoCross, talk to a cop, they like to sit outside of track events and wait for people to leave them, because that's when they can make a LOT of pulls. |
yeah, we have a bunch of guys that come and spin their tires in the adjacent parking lots, or pull wheelies on the crotchrockets back and forth in front of the lot (what are they trying to do, get a date?), and stuff like that, but those aren't the guys that are running in the event...
That England stuff sure sounds like 1984 to me... How can we have forgotten our fear of totalitarianism in less than 2 decades? Hell, GPS makes me nervous, as well as Census forms that are 12 pages long, etc., etc... |
I agree that the camera speed traps in England are reminiscent of 1984, but in all fairness it was written in 1948 so we've actually had over 50 years to forget about it http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif
And on the topic of street racing, does anyone remember the post a while back about the pedestrian that was killed somewhere in Canada when a Boxster nailed him in the middle of the crosswalk at 100mph while street racing? If I recall correctly, this happened in the very early morning hours when you wouldn't expect people to be walking around, so this proves that there's no way you can be safe when doing stupid things like that. Everyone should limit their racing to the track, dragstrip, autocross, etc. |
So RaF944, care to guess what the insurance might be now for your 911 dream car.
OK, we all get tickets, I just got one for a car pool lane violation. All I did was pull into the lane just a bit to look down the lane of traffic I was in and got nailed. Bike cop must have been just a few cars behind me in my lane. IMOP, street racing is for civics and knuckle draggers. Sorry, but I have a hard opinion about this because I have seen people get hurt. |
Todd951 - any idea when 1984 was written (around 1948, maybe?) Perhaps (of course) it was a wise person's response to stuff like that!
Boy you guys were advanced then - In this country, we were still beating people up for being Turkish and stuff. Did someone say Knuckle-draggers? [This message has been edited by redNeckarsulm2 (edited 04-12-2001).] |
he's busy smacking you up on the wood-dash topic...
grandma. |
It's striking to hear somebody say if I'm racing it's gonna be safe, ON PUBLIC ROADS!!!
I don't want anybody to get me wrong, we need cops, that's for certain. I just don't like the way the government makes them work... Yeah, sure giving tickets would reduce the #of people speeding, or running stop signs, etc. but it's not (in my opinion) the best way to approach the subject. I've street raced more than a few times, heck that was the only type of racing I did until last year! Fun it is, but safe it's not. We've all pushed our cars, there's places that are more safe compared to others... Doughnuts in the parking lot? Well, that was more like sliding around in a parking lot, severe oversteer if you will. I really enjoyed doing that, I love to hang the tail out (either with throttle, if the turns tight, or I'm going slow enough, or with trailing brake oversteer) at any turn. I used to do this at every on ramp I could. What's the problem with doing it in an empty parking lot? (There was 3 Porsches there, and that's it). We all went out to have some fun, it was NOT in a residential area, it was at a shopping mall type of complex. The closest thing around, where people could actually be was a gas station, about 1/4th a mile from the lot, no kidding. Was that dangerous? I doubt it, I've been going to parking lots at about 4am, to practice driving until the very last day my license got revoked. Unsafe? No (I think it's better for your reactions, and car control during normal driving), illegal? Oh yes. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |
Here's one from todays local news 4.12.01
Drag Race Ends in Passenger's Death San Francisco police are investigating a deadly accident in the Sunset District. It happened about 8:30 Wednesday night. Police say two cars were drag racing as they approached the intersection of 41st Avenue and Judah Street. A MUNI train was also approaching. "One of the cars was able to stop at the stop sign. The other one didn’t," says police Lt. Jerry Lankford. "(The second car) tried to beat the light rail vehicle that was travelling in the perpendicular direction. The light rail vehicle struck the vehicle, dragging it about 50 feet." A passenger in the car was killed. The driver was seriously injured. The MUNI driver was also hurt. __________________ (brings new meaning to the saying "I'll be home in 20 minuts flat") |
I've had 2 tickets in my 5 years of driving,
one of them speeding. If any of you live in the Vancouver BC area, the local quarter mile race track opens on weekend nights to keep street racing off the streets. They open from 6 to midnight or so. Too bad its only the 1/4 part since if you keep on going, it becomes part of a 2 mile or so road race track. |
Yeah, who wants to take part in a 1/4 mile drag in there 944?
Okay, I think we're getting some things mixed up here. Street Racing and Road Racing. Street Racing I do NOT do, nor do I advocate it at ANY TIME of the day. There could be people in the street at any hour, and that is almost a given. When I say ROAD racing, I'm talking a high way, a big one, with no stop lights, no side walks, none of that other pedestrianish B.S. that's made for their use. I'm talking a long stretch of Interstate at 3A.M., things like that. There is a difference. And racing there can be just as safe as anywhere else. |
dogs, deer, etc..?
Broken pavement, debris...? |

Sorry, I don't buy it: racing on a highway is NOT SAFE. No stink'in way. NEVER. Don't even try to justify how safe it can be. (Anybody have stats on highway deaths last year?!?) How can you guarantee there's no one on the highway?!?! By the way, not everybody works 9-5. There are night shifts, and tired people going home in the middle of the night. I work in IT (Information Technology), and I would hate to hear that one of my night crew is six feet under 'cause of some knucklehead was racing on the highway. It's one thing to say that you like to street race. It's another to say that it's safe. Sorry, but that's a load of horse hockey. You're giving yourself a false sense of security by believing that. Take it to the track, where safety equipment is a requirement (helmets, roll cages, fire extinguishers.) PreryDOG: when you race on the highway, are you wearing a helmet? 5 point harness? And if you are, are the other (innocent) people in cars that you zoom by wearing safety gear??!?!? I think not. Please, race on a track, not on public roads. Don't be stupid. -Zoltan. I dont think that tickets should be given out by what speed you are going. Sometimes going over the speed limit is safer than doing it. If all the cars around you are doing 85, then you shouldnt be doing 55. You might be the only one not breaking the law, but you would be the one to cause the accident, and the one most likely be one of the people to get seriously injured. Its the differences in speed that kill, not speed itself. Likewise if the speed of traffic on the freeway is 5mph due to conjestion, or what not. The person doing 55 is fricken insane, but not speeding. I think police should give out more tickets for reckless driving than for speeding. And it should be there opinion on what reckless driving is, because i think using a lawyer to get out of something that could have cost peoples lives is stupid.

by the way, I have 3 tickets, all of which were in my 300zx. Two times the officer pulled over about 20 cars on this one road. Four lanes either direction, speed lime 35. We were all doing 45. The other time I was on some Highway in Texas at two in the morning, going from Red Oak to Dallas. I was cruising at about 70 (I was speeding), no other cars on the road and then a cop with all hislights off pulled off the shoulder and pulled me over for doing 85 in a 55. It was the biggest bull**** in the world. I have hated cops from that point on.

I didnt bring it up...you did....While the other guys are saying how muh cops suck...you go rubbing in a ticket in my face... The cop was cool and he gave me a ticket for driving on the wrong side of the road.....$80...this is not going to make my insurance jump...I am going to tell them I accidently turned into a one way street. ------------------ 85.5 Porsche 944 |
Raf, so your basicly saying you have no morals...you should start taking responsiblity for your actions. Before you learn the hard way.

All I have to say is...
Roads are for transportation, that is why they were put there... Race tracks are for racing, that is why they are there. LETS KEEP IT THAT WAY! There is a reason for it. As much as I don't want to... I am going to keep my mouth shut now. |

What I wanna know if how did you end up on the wrong side of the road??
|
it was a 2 way street...someone had to go on the other side...and that ended up being...well me http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif
stray i do have morals......i think you are taking this little incident a little bit to hard...it was a road for commercial use...there are never any cars there...The only reason the cop was there was because a late night employee complained about the noise... ------------------ 85.5 Porsche 944 |
