Question Do I need a new Voltage Regulator?

Hi everybody, I'm a new member on the BBS and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem I'm having with my car.

I'm the very proud owner of a beautiful red 1987 944 N/A. But there's a sort of strange problem with the charging system. About a month ago, I was forced to bring my car to a shop for a new alternator (rebuilt). I was about a thousand miles from home and the place I was living didn't allow residents to work on their cars. Anyway, my voltage indicator had dropped to 12 volts, and my old alternator wasn't charging the battery anymore.

The auto shop installed a new alternator for me and now the charging system works much better. However, now I have noticed that my dashboard volt-meter will show a good voltage (usually just below 14 V) when I start the car, then over time the reading will gradually decrease to just above 12 V. Sometimes the voltage drops right down to 12. Then I notice that my other guages go haywire. My coolant temperature guage will peg at the top of its range. And also my tachometer will behave erratically. Usually the problem fixes its self after a few minutes and my voltage will go back up to normal range.

Over-all, I suppose my question is: Do re-built alternators usually come with new voltage regulators? And if so, is it possible my little electronic gremlins might be caused by a defective voltage regulator.

Any kind of feed-back would be a great help to me and my precious Porsche.

Thanks.

I have seen rebuilt alternators that were simply painted and cleaned (sometimes in that order). I actually got the one back that I turned in after it had been 'fixed'.

Sounds like the regulator is bad. It takes a really low voltage to 'kick in'.

As $$$ as it seems, sometimes a new or 'Bosch Genuine Rebuilt' is better money spent.

PorscheFreak944, do a search for User IceShark. He is the man when it comes to voltage regulators, battery cables and headlight upgrades for 944s. You can send him a message if does not respond to this post.

Doesn't FR Wilk sell an adjustable voltage regulator for like $20. I cant remember but check his web site. I have heard good things about his products.

Garage
Clean the grounds between the battery, chassis and engine.

If your battery is over four years old have it tested.
