I Would First Like To Thank The Members Here
For All The Help That You Have Given Me The Past Six Months While Restoring My '83 944 She's Almost Done. I Do Have A Question, When I Shift The Car I Get A Klunking Noise Is It Something In The Rear End Or Trans Mount? Anybody Have Any Ideas?? Just A Note The Car Has About 70k On It (original) Thanks |

Klunking noises from rear end are usually CV joint related. Lift back end (use jacks, not ramps), and test axles for play. Also, visually inspect for cracked CV boots, and/or leakage.

When this has come up in the past on this board, it has ended up being the Clutch. Although not located in the back of the car, the noise that a clutch makes when the rubber center disk is breaking down travels so that it sounds like it is coming from the rear. If you get a rhythmic knocking under accelleration, then chances are it is the clutch.

Drove me nuts too. Did a clutch job and found the center rubber thingie on the clutch broken. Hana pa'a (good luck) and aloha, Neal

Same here, I redid mine on Neals suggestions and thats the exact problem and symptom that I had. Here is a pic of a blown rubber center clutch:
