				de-lurking and some questions

Hello - I've been reading this board for a while, but I haven't registered until today. I'm a (relatively) new 924S owner and not very technically inclined. You all seem smart, so I had a few questions:

				1) I just got a new taillight lens to replace a cracked one - what sort of sealant should I use when I put the new one in (I assume I should scrape out the old stuff since its pretty dry and hardened)? Do I need any tools to apply it? 2) the metal contacts where the bulbs screw in for the taillight are really corroded and the bulbs aren't making good contact. The inside contacts are kind of hard to get to, so I dunno if I can simply file off the corrosion - is there any sort of metal cleaner that will make this easier? thanks

Use black silicone - use it liberaly. For the light bulb sockets, use a battery terminal brush to clean them out - a little vinegar will take a lot of the corrosion out. AFJuvat

You have changed the timing and balance shaft belts?

thanks for the replies. With the silicone, I just run a thick bead around the outside, moosh it into place, and wipe off the excess?

And yes, I just had the t belt changed. I knew from the start that it was something to be careful of, but according to the PO's records it had < 10k on. But then I started reading this board, and pretty soon I couldn't sleep at night, so I had it changed regardless .One more question: where do I find the option codes on this car?

Think the codes are in the cargo area. Pull the carpet off the back where the tail lights are.

Also you can find the option codes on the original owners manual for the car if you have it.

For sealing the taillight lenses I use butyl cord (don't remember the diameter) which is available at your friendly NAPA store. This is the same stuff used to seal windshields which don't use a gasket surrounding the windshield ala 911s. It is much less messy than the silicone.

Of course mine have a few one inch gaps as the back has been caved in by a SUV.

NAPA Strip Caulk (part no. 4424) I need to do that eventually too, so I copied it down at some point. Let me know if that part no. works out, heh?

So I ended up using black silicone that I got from the local schmuck's... It seems to work pretty well, although I have a bad feeling that I didn't use enough on the right taillight. I guess I'll know for sure after the next time it rains (which shouldn't be long!). For the contacts, I ended up using a q-tip dipped in vinegar and a screwdriver to scrape off the oxidation, and that actually seems to have worked.
