8 second question...
Ok, i got into an american car arguement. Is it possible with any stock USA made v8 engine to run a 8 second quarter mile by putting in any tranny and gears you want?

I would think it is possible. Chevy makes 570ci V8 that makes 720HP stock as a crate engine.

Only if you mounted wheels and a seat on the combo and had the fuel cell in your lap.
High 9s-Low 10s sure with mods N/A Funny cars have trouble with 8sec

I think more importantly than the engine/tranny/gearing combo would be the chassis selection.
I remember seeing or reading something about putting a 350hp olds 455 into a top fuel dragster chassis and running 9's... However, lets say you strapped that 720hp crate engine into the back of a gutted Corvair.......well,...maybe parts of the car would cross the line in 8 sec's or less....

I only know a little about some Chevy engines, but the LS6, L88, and the ZL1 (an aluminum 427) engines were all very under rated by the factory as far as their true power, and were very powerful engines. I agree that the chassis, and getting the power to the ground are the most critical elemets.

You are right, Chevy, esp. Corvette have understated engine horsepower...

by only changing tranny and gears it would not be able to hook up well enough to get into 8 second territory. tires would be the limiting factor.
the 725 hp LPE corvette (very very far from stock) gets to the 1/4 mile in 9.5 seconds with street tires. thats fast as balls but its a far cry from 8.0 seconds
