5 Speed Noise
Are the 5 speed trannys somewhat known to be a little noisy in 1st and 2nd? Maybe even 3rd?

I'm going to be changing the fluid in the tranny this weekend. I have a gallon of Sweepco.

The recommended transmission lube is AMSOIL Series 2000 75W90
It made a huge difference in the way my high milage transaxle sounded and shifted. I think it is far superior to Swepco. If you've changed to Swepco already, I'd still change to AMSOIL, because it made a huge difference in the way mine sounded and shifts. regards, P

Hmmm..... I'll keep that in mind. I may as well use the stuff I got. At least if not to flush the other crap out of it. Don't know when the fluid was changed last.

re: "diff getting ready to blow" is this common with 944s? I'm still "getting to know" my car and now that I've rearranged the hatch seal so it does sort of what it's supposed to with the resultant decrease in wind noise, I can hear a lot of R&P whine in 4th and 5th - definitely road speed related not engine speed. Please tell me they can whine and not mean anything bad!
I did just change my oil with Redline MTL, the old gear oil looked clean but was awful thick and did have a little bit of sparkle to it. thanks nate

Toolboy, get that redline out. I don't remember why you're not supposed to run it, but I know there's a really good reason not to use it (I THINK it's the wrong formula to use, thus meaning it will ruin the tranny). The entire transaxle on the 944 series is weak, ESPECIALLY THE DIFFERENTIAL! Do NOT launch the car (it's not a matter of if you'll destroy the R&P, it's when). The actual diff is quite easy to destroy as well. I know that when I demolished mine I had: one cracked spider tooth, one chipped spider tooth, broken the differential carrier in half (yes, the entire diff was in 2 peices), and i cracked the R&P. So be careful!!!
