944 1984, Any good for da wife?

The wife needs a better car for going to work, she is tired of the beetle, wants heat, hard start in the rain, yada-yada.

I can get a '84 944 for a deal, but not a steal. The shop just wants to get their money out of it. It's a customers car and she justs wants out of the car, as does the (good friend) shop.

It has new waterpump, timing belt and a bunch of other odds and ends. No milkshake (cooler seals) problems, paint Ok (but not new), fuchs, 222,000kms and seems to run good.

The bad is it will need a power steering pump soon and it has been sitting for 3 years. It was just driven for 2 hrs with no problems.

What's it worth?
Can little kids fit in the back OK?
Good car or bad car?
What to look for?
Anything else?

Thanks Mark

I let my wife drive my '84 944. Big mistake, now I have to hide the keys.

P/S pump is no big deal as long as the rack is not leaking. Check the rack carefully for leaks. Power Steering is great until it breaks. Check all the bushings, ball joints, and struts and shocks. pay attention to the strut mounts up top (cracking). Is the engine/oil pan wet or caked with oil, etc....

Rule of thumb do the oil cooler seals with the belts and waterpump. Have the garage do the seals before purchase. Not hard but a PIA.

You can fit small, starving, ethiopian children in the back if they are laying down, just kidding.

Rick

You're a gentleman for considering a 944 for your wife, however, for "my" wife, I decided against it. I have a '84 and I would rather not see her driving it because I've observed her driving habits over the years, and I've seen her reaching for her purse and the cell phone. In a 944 if you reach too far you'll turn the wheel just a little bit, and at speed, that can put you into the weeds faster than you can blink an eye. Therefore she stays in the Volvo 850, which has a far less sensitive steering response, and is a safer car for her (poor) driving habits.

regards, P

..P my wife is a very good driver. She won't own a cell phone, hates them and would never take her eyes off the road. We have never owned an automatic and she nursed a slipping clutch in her old rabbit for almost 100,000kms. Her driving skills are better than over 80% of the males on the road and has had our 914 over 100mph many times. All of our driving is backroad or highway.

I don't know if she can do a clutch, but she can (and has) lifted her half of a beetle engine.

I can pick up this car for about $3000 USD

If you think she wont neglect the car it will be good. Its worth like 3k if the engine is in good shape and not leaking like crazy and all maintanence has been done recently. Kids can fit in the back easy...a full adult ..not easily. Its a good car?? Id have to see it to tell you. Timing belt and stuff has been done ..what about the clutch? I like fuchs.

sounds like she may be able to handle it no problem, as long as she doesn't neglect it. as far as the price, sounds like an o.k. deal, but one would have to see the car before making a full asessment

Make sure the power steering does leak!! I had to change several bushings because the rubber was destroyed from power steering fluid. Porsche bushings are not cheap..especially the one that connects the shocks to the control arms.

3k is an OK deal, but ive seen decent 944s go as low as 2k.

Yep, the power steering was on the way out. Although this 944 just had $2000 worth of work done, it still needed a lot more.
We took a pass on this one, going to take our time and will keep our eyes open for a better one.
